Just about to make an uncharacteristically frivolous purchase.
A set of Tan-wall tyres for my Ragley Mmmbop

I have narrowed my selection down to a Magic Mary, EVO Addix super gravity soft in 27.5 x 2.35 for the front, and a Nobby Nic EVO Addix Speedgrip Liteskin 27.5 x 2.25 for the rear.

just about to click pay, and the fear of buying the wrong thing gripped me.

Given I am on a hardtail, In the Lakes, with my atrocious line choices, and general lack of finesse.
Am I going to destroy the Liteskin tyre within the first 10 mins?

Help!

Super Gravity front and Liteskin rear, have I misread that? Seems to run against consensus for HTs of a much tougher rear than front. Any inserts in there? (Not that they will save you ripping a sidewall, mind)

Yes you'll destroy the liteskin tire in two seconds. If you need sg on the front the you probably need it on the back as well.

Yes there is a Rimpact insert on the rear wheel. And yes that wouldn't help the tyre from grenading

Didn't necessarily need a super gravity front tyre, thats just what was available and affordable.

I am struggling slightly to find a suitable rear tyre to mach the MM up front.

it needs to conform to a very strict set of parameters

1. Must be Schwalbe, I cannot fit unmatched tyres, It would drive me daft (Or dafter than I already am)
2. Must be Tanwall.
3. Be fast rolling (I have had a Hans Dampf Addix soft on the rear before, For exactly one ride, and the bike very nearly got thrown down a mountain)

Currently running WTB tyres with a Trail boss Fast/light on the rear, Have had it for well over a year without issue. and they are very thin and light casings?

Liteskin is a paper thin xc tyre, avoid at all costs.

Liteskin is very weak. In fact snakeskin's very weak tbh. In the lakes, on an Mmmbop, it's not going to have an easy life...

IME WTB fast/light isn't really that lightweight?

Agree, Liteskin is probably to light. They are barely even rated as tubeless by Schwalbe.
Snakeskin would be the way to go at a minimum. They make the Racing Ray in Tanwall Snakeskin.

Indeed, wholesale switch to WTB seems the way to go. Or go black sidewalls.

Do they do Rock Razor in tanwall?

They are fast rolling and available in the heavy carcass options.

Thank you for all your replies,
They confirmed what I already sort of knew in the back of my mind.

I have now ordered a set of Hutchinson Griffus tan walls.
(Alcohol may have had a factor in the decision process)

Should have no issues with torn sidewalls or knobs, they look like proper tanks of tyres.
Pedaling uphill may be interesting though?

Apologies, I figured I'd piggyback off this thread as I believe the sentiment is much the same...

After this thread I decided I'd maybe stick with schwalbe on my build. Only problem is there's so many flippin' permutations to chose from:
- compound
- casing
- diameter

then factoring in new stock and old stock (I believe all the standards/diameters changed with this summers release?)

A bit more on my brief:

I’m wanting tyres for my Scandal build, I’ve got kind of moon on a stick requirements, I don’t want a setup that’s too draggy for riding a few miles on road to the local trails but at the same time I want something that can handle Enduro-esque descents. I’m Deeside based (NE Scotland) so trails are a mix of peaty heather, muddy rooty woods and granite.

I'm thinking Magic Mary upfront and Hans Dampf rear? as I understand it 2.35" now comes up smaller than it used to so I'm better buying 2.6" (If I'm buying new stock?)

Help me out here! tell me what to buy!

The 2.35 Mary seems to have shrunk, get the 2.6, but the 2.35 Hans is still a decent size.

I might try the new Big Betty on the rear for where you are though.

There isn't a 2.35 Magic Mary anymore only in 26" they come in 2.4, 2.6 and 2.8. So it's easy to tell old stock from new.

Just bought some 2.35 snakeskin magic marys while they're still available, definitely shrunk and the diamond pattern on the sides seem more pronounced than before.
Liteskins arent fit for purpose and should be recalled, withdrawn or banned.🙂

Tanwalls should be banned too, there, I said it, brace for impact 😁.

Everyone forgot that schwalbe tanwalls leak sealant like a mutha if you're running them tubeless.
