Is it possible to run the Schwalbe Performance line of tyres tubeless with sealant, gorilla tape and Stans valves? Like THIS NOBBY NIC tyre at Wiggle?

They are loads cheaper than the others in the Schwalbe range but a lot of things I read say that it needs to have TL in the description to be tubeless compatible. Surely most tyres are made to be run tubeless these days aren't they?

I've run cheaper non tubeless maxxis tyres before with rim strips and sealant on non tubeless wheels. I thought tubeless ready related more to the sidewall strength than whether or not they actually seal.

Not sure about tubeless compatibility, but performance Hans dampfs I tried were lethal off road, 0 grip on anything other than bone dry

+1 for what kimbers says. I've found the performance tyres are like death on a stick on anything that was damp.

Nope. Many/almost all will run tubeless even though they aren't tubeless ready.

Schwalbes, on the whole, all go up fine.

Though, to be frank i'd never dick around with gorilla tape when i can get tubeless tape from alternative sources!

Performance versions are cheap for a reason. They don’t like to hold air without tubes ( really porous side walls ) and grip isn’t up to the softer compounds.

I've used Schwalbe Performance tyres tubeless in the past but I'd have to echo what's been said above, namely that the compound is a bit hard and lacks grip. Bontrager tyres and Specialized are all tubeless ready and generally retail for £30-40 so much less expensive than Schwalbe and other premium rubber.

Hmm, ok. So maybe not Performance ones then, what is an equivalent tyre to the Nobby Nic by other brands? Conti X King or Trail King? Maxxis Crossmark or High Roller 2? Spesh Ground Control? Bontrager XR2 or XR3?

Ditto, Schwalbe Performance will tubeless and will last for ever but won’t be sticky. Possibly as a Rear with something nicer up front if budget is all.

I’m a WTB fan right now and have been for a couple of years. Maybe look at a Vigilante/Trailboss combo or if not encounterering wet roots etc maybe a pair of Trailbosses?

I've got a Ground Control as my summer front tyre. Grip is fine but on the regular casing the sidewalls have been prone to cuts. Bonty XR2 is fine on the rear but sketchy as soon as it gets wet. XR3 would be a better all rounder. Added bonus with Bonty is the unconditional guarantee. Buy them, use them for a few weeks and if you don't get on with them return them. You've got 30 days and hold onto your receipt.

Xr2 on the rear and xr3 on the front through the summer and then stick another xr3 on the rear for autumn and winter? Prices don't seem to be rediculous on bounty tyres either.

I have a performance racing Ralph on the back of my bike and it’s fine, drifty, but fine. It took a bit of extra sealant initially but now it is fine and holds air ok.

Vittoria Barzo front and Peyote rear. Relatively new tyres to me but well impressed. Got fed up of destroying Schwalbe sidewalls so thought i'd give these a go. Well priced and pretty light. Up tubeless with track pump.

Like the look of those Vittoria Barzo tyres, from reviews they seem to have plenty of grip and still pretty quick. Does the peyote still have grip in the mud that we've got at the moment?

Not sure Peyote would have loads of grip in deep mud. I'm in Yorkshire and the mud here is thick and claggy. I swapped onto Maxxis Beavers 2.0 for winter but was well into the really crappy weather before I swapped. As a comparison I replaced Rocket Ron front and rear but the Barzo is way better IMO. How about going Barzo front and rear?.

Yeah, I was thinking Barzo front and rear too. Might be the way forward. I've currently got On One Smorgasbord f&r but I'm not a huge fan of them, bit draggy and I think the sidewalls roll too easily.

Out of interest, what width are you using Teamslug?

29 X 2.25. On Stans Crest Mk3 they have a nice profile. Got some on some Dt Swiss XRC carbons too, obviously a bit more rounded cos they are slightly narrower rims.

You know the same tyres are available in the different ranges, don't you?  So you can get Nobby Nic tread pattern in a better tyre from Schwalbe.

What molgrips said.

Although I found the performance compound gripped OK on a test bike, it could have just been the conditions that day. The performance compound is a bit slower/less grippy, but it depends what other compound you'd be using anyway, and the nature of the trails - it won't make much difference on mud, but muddy trails tend to have wet roots...

I just accept that tyres are pricey these days. Although full retail price is a bit of an eye opener!

Not sure the quote command is working properly yet.

Molgrips - Yes, I know that but anything other than the Performance range/compound is silly money (in my eyes anyway).

teamslug - I'm looking for a 29x2.25 at the moment in the TNT version but can't find any in the UK in stock. 2.35 are in stock at PBK.

Never ordered from them but they appear to be in stock. I run both types TNT and 'normal'. Not split or damaged either yet. £17.50 for bottom link. Might worth trying at that?.

Just had a look and shipping is a bit steep 🙁

I saw those but they're actually in Italy and you pay in Euros so you get charged by your bank for the pleasure of that.

There are now tubeless Performance Schwalbe tyres. As has been said already though, the rubber compound is not as grippy as the Evo tyres.

I've been on several sets of racing ralph performance for XC for years - find them fine in the peak district and go up on stans crest tubeless absolutely fine.  Hold pressure for months using cheap NRG sealant from PX.
