I’ve just mounted a new magic mary radial tyre - 2.5’’ - on a stans flow ex mk 3 front. The shape of the tyre is really narrow and ‘bulbous’ at the sidewalls.
A bit underwhelming to look at. Like an old school 2.3’’ tyre.
anybody any experience. Is it the tyre? Or the rim? Or just the combo of these 2 together?
I have another wheel and considering if its worth the faff of changing it all and trying a different wheel for a better result (hope fortus 30).
cheers
I had mine on a 30mm rim, and yep it looked and felt pinched even though it's not, I think the sideknobs are both quite on the shoulder giving the tyre a very round profile, and also not very well supported. Odd thing is, I've had nonradial MMs before on literally the same rim and didn't feel that way even though I think they're the same shape, I think it's more that I saw the old one as basically a spiky trail tyre but the radial definitely feels like it wants to be a super capable enduro tyre and the confidence the carcass gave me meant it was kind of writing cheques it couldn't cash. That's probably very unfair, "If this carcass was worse I wouldn't have crashed because I'd have been more cautious!"
Anyway, yep, compared to the argotal it replaced and the highroller 3 I replaced it with the shape on the same rim is definitely less good, the edge grip is also definitely less good and yep it does look very much like it's pinched even though it's not. I absolutely loved the radial carcass thing but the mary is feeling its age a bit I think. To make full use of the clever carcass I think they need to tweak the tyre and also probably the rubber, just get a MM2 out maybe to balance out the performance.
(Mboy, I think it was, suggested that if you want a more aggressive front the shredda rear works great as a sort of super-mary, I'd really like to try that. But tbf now I've got the highroller on I'm not going to mess with that for the forseeable, it's a little slow but it's bloody fantastic)
