You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Morning all. There appears to be a choice of: Nobby Nic, Magic Mary, Rocket Ron, Rock Razor or Smart Sam, with widths of 2.60, 2.80 or 3.00 (depending on the tyre).
If you were wanting to buy 'the one tyre to rule them all...' which of the above is likely to be most popular? TIA.
I have 2.8" NNs that came on my bike as standard and really like them apart from thin sidewalls but that can be said of all schwalbe I think I'm right to think.
Maybe get a NN out back and a MM up front in both 2.8" as they have more bitey tread apparently than 3.0" and 2.6" isn't really plus.
Forreference, I run my 2.8" NNs on 38mm external rims and find the profile of tyre incredibly inspiring and well supported
I've only tried the Nic, which I use as a front tyre, but it's pretty good.
Wouldn't mind a go with a Mary on the front in current conditions, but I don't really ride my plus wheels in the mud TBH.
What's your general type of riding?
I went 3" NN front and rear. The rear one is the "Apex"? version. Basically thick sidewalls with a layer of foam protection in it. It's completely bombproof! Took it to Zona Zero for a week, no issues whatsoever....but it's heavy!
For Pennine winter slop they're ok, no grip at all in proper mud. And absolutely amazing on rocky stuff. I think i'll be trying a Rocket Ron on the back for a bit less drag, in a month or two.
i hated the 2.8 nobby nics i had, seemed very wandery, the maxxis ardent/vittoria bomboloni seem much better leaning the bike over and less draggy (they do have smaller knobs though)
2.8 Schwalbe are same weight as 3.0 - meaning 3.0 are especially fragile.
Only get the thin sidewalls if you enjoy patching or replacing and having a general faff with all things tubeless - 2018 is all about tough carcasses for me . .

Really? My 3.0 has managed 2,200 miles of South Downs flint with a just one minor nick, sealed by Stans.
So...not that fragile. It's on 35mm internal width rims and run at 18psi.
I'm running apex NN front and rear, had 2.8 both ends but changed to 2.6 at the rear when I replaced the misshapen one for a bit more clearance as its a codeine.
My 2,8s are hanging in the shed 'cos they were too fragile.
I thought I'd have trouble with durability but they worked out fine, to my surprise. I didn't like the grip of the 3.0 Nic and Ron though- considering they roll about as slow as a 2.3 29er minion pairing I thought the Ron grip especially was pretty dismal.
I ended up going back entirely to 29 so maybe I'm biased but I definitely wouldn't use the Ron again and the Nic was OK at best. (Scotroutes bought it off me and got on with it better though)
I am interested by the Mary and Razor though, if I was still b+ing I'd definitely want to try those

Too fragile for what? I'm not being argumentative, just curious what others expect from plus tyres.
I ride my hardtail in B-plus mode on local woodsy singletrack & trail centres, I know the tyres wouldn't be tough enough for the rocks - which is annoying as that's where they feel best.
Rocket Ron 2.8 have been good for me. 1800 miles.
Just a bit rubbish in the slime.
