Given the Hans Dampf has changed in its Addis version, what are people’s views of it as a front tyre?
I got my Solaris Max last summer with 2.8 WTB Rangers which I enjoyed in the lovely summer we had, before switching to 29er for winter. Having just changed back I’m not feeling the love and whilst really fast rolling, they lack bite in loose stone and especially Mud.
I run Nobby Nic 2.35 on the 29er and find these a good compromise for rolling and grip, yes they struggle on the steeper more natural terrain, but happy otherwise
Looking to replace the rangers with something gripper. Should I just replicate the 29er and fit NN front and rear or put an even gripper front tyre on? Would a HD/NN combo be the way to go or go the whole hog and put a Magic Mary on from and NN on rear?
Happy to hear suggestions for other brands. Ta
My Trek came with 2.8NN front and rear. The rear was OK and I kept it on the bike until I ripped the sidewall. The front was bloody awful in all conditions and was binned in favour of a MM in 2.6 that is still on the bike now, over a year later.
Have a look at the Michelin Wild AM. Comes in a 2.8 and a 2.6.
Performance ones are only £26, and are proper tubeless tyres. Go up easily, and have stayed up do far.
I'd say the sidewalls are similar to or more robust than Maxxis exo, though maybe not quite as solid as a WTB tough carcass.
Great grip (I'm running f&r) they remind me of the Bonty XR4/SE4, but a bit better IMO.

Schwalbly Shite
Much like jelly just browner
2.8 Nobby Nics are a great tyre.
Shwalbe 'performance' tyres were always shyte but the evo ones are very good... But they've changed all the nomenclature now with the 'new' ones.
Now I'm totally confused.
I didn't like 'em but it could be more about plus tyres than schwalbe- I had a nobby nic/racing ralph combo and they weren't all that grippy, or very fast. Never had any problems with flats, which kind of amazed me considering how thin they are, but I guess they're tougher than they feel.
Maxxis Minion DHF 2.8 up front and a Rekon+ 2.8 out back. I've run 2.8 NNs and something else that I can't remember the name of that was faster and lighter. Both felt slightly flimsy. Maxxis rubber compounds just feel more reliable to me and I've found the DHF/Rekon pretty much fit and forge in a grippy and quick enough sort of way. YMMV.
