Hi All,
Might be one for Chameleon owners only, or maybe a more general 29er on 27.5+ Question, regardless, help would be appreciated.
Just took the plunge and bought a Chameleon 2020 frame, GX Groupset, SLX Brakes and now I am going to make a bid to assemble this beast!
I've only ridden 29ers. Being 6ft 5 (appreciate it doesn't really matter) but they feel comfortable.
The frame I have bought comes with 27.5+ dropouts and i've ordered a 27.5+ 130mm 46MM Pike Fork, can I run this with 29ers and if so what Tyre width and what are the drawbacks of not putting on the 29r Dropout Kit (Which is sold out everywhere)
I want a halfway house between XC and Trail and this seems like it would fit the bill!
But maybe you would recommend going for 27.5+ wheels instead!
Any help would be appreciated!
Edit - I want to keep the versatility to switch between 27.5+ and 29er too. And if i dont have to spend £50 on a dropout set I dont need then i'll be happy!
Short answer about your fork is don't know. Get the number off it and look it up on fox's site. AFAIK fox don't make forks specific to 27.5+.
I've run the frame with 27.5 dropouts since I got it and switch between both wheel sizes. 2.8s in + guise, 2.3 in 29ers. Fine. If you want to be bang on trend and get the BB as low as you can get the other dropouts. Wouldn't say I've suffered from not having them. Maybe I don't know what I'm missing?
Good luck with the build. Hope you enjoy it. Took me a while to settle in coming from a 26er but enjoying it now with a nice set of wheels.
I'm guessing the 27+ dropouts offset the BB height slightly, so using 29 with them would make the BB marginally higher than intended. Whether you'd notice is another matter. Though I haven't tried 27+, it seems the market prefers 29. Personally I'd stick to 29 as 27+ is likely to be draggier/slower and less suited to the xc side. You should have no trouble getting a 29x2.6 in your fork. Post some pics when it's built!
Thanks Guys, happy with a slightly higher BB going to look at some 29 wheels and pull the trigger.
Pictures and a review of the build to follow!
Was looking at hope or hunt for the wheels.
I have a carbon version and use 27.5+ with 140mm forks.
Rides very nicely and I prefer it to the 29 x 2.4" I also tried.
Mines a large with the 27.5+ drop outs and I'd say it fits perfectly between XC and trail.
Great downhill, good xc and slightly worse (but still good) than my On One Whippet uphill
Great stuff twonks exactly what I wanted to hear!
Have to get some shots of that carbon sounds great!
A few pics although not that good.
Last one with 29" wheels on. (Ibis 938)

Awesome!
At that was with no amendment to the dropouts?
Nothing changed at all. They are half way along the available position front to back and the drop outs are the 27.5+ variants.
Mine is 29er with 29er dropouts. I’ve run it as a mullet with 27.5+ On the rear. Rides great. Both ways.
tbh i find mine more responsive and nimble on the +. contrary i know. 😉
that's comparing numen 35 internal alloy rims (wheelset) with a dhf 2.8 and spesh slaughter 2.8 compared to a hans dampf and slaughter 2.3 on 30mm internal light bicycle carbon rims on hope pro 4. the cush on the + is noticeable but the carbons are a stiff build for sure. never thought i'd notice that but hit it hard and you do.
i have some used scraper i40 on el guapo hubs with dhf and dhr if you're interested OP...?
