Hi everyone
I haven't been on here for quite a few years. I aneed some advice on a santa cruz bronson c that I'm looking to buy. The bike has some nasty looking paint chips/perhaps damage to the carbon. I just wanted people's opinions on this and if I should avoid it like the plague. The bike has just had a full service with new pivot bearings, shock and fork just serviced at tf tuned etc.but the frame though... Link to photos on flikr

Pics? Chips are fine (my bronson has a few!) but you'd need to be sure the chip isn't the symptom of a deep rock strike, ie damaged below.

Tbh, Carbon is probably about the easiest to get sorted now, and not that expensive to get done either.

Personally, if your at all in doubt in buying a second hand bike (especially carbon), *don't buy it.....

You'll only ever have that back of your mind, worry every time you ride it.

*Unless it's cheap enough for you to budget in getting it checked professionally.

Click on the link to my flikr for the photos. Is there a way to inspect without xray if there is any deep damage? I have heard tapping with a coin and listen for the sound going from a higher pitch to a lower pitch in the damaged area. And also just looking for any fibres torn?

Tbh, it looks tatty, but as long as the price reflects that, I'd buy that, wouldn't be paying top dollar though.

Why do folk not even clean their bikes properly before selling? and take the heli tape off, the bits where it's peeling away look shit.

It's a mountain bike, its been ridden.

The marks look non offensive, wouldn't put me off based on those alone, it looks like just paint chips and invisiframe dirt.

I managed to get the seller from 1800 down to 1300. The rest of the gear on it is decent (pike rct3 with a whole new csu fitted and serviced by tf tuned). Command dropper, xt brakes, float dps kashima raer shock, slx and zee 11 speed drive train. Wheels are the only slight let down, they are spcialized/rovals from a stump jumper but they will do for now. And apparently all serviced only a few rides a go with new frame bearings as well.

That's a good price, I'd be happy with that.

I'd have to say the last pic (lower link pivot bolt on rear triangle) is definitely damaged carbon, I wouldn't rule out buying it on that alone as I've had far worse damage repaired on a carbon frame but I'd be getting a scan /xray done to make sure the damage isn't more widespread than is visible. The rest of the pics look cosmetic so I wouldn't be concerned about them and, as already stated above, carbon frames can be repaired fairly easily compared to metal frames, not sure I'd buy it without seeing the bike in person tho. I've used Carbon Bike Repairs personally, it was during covid lockdown and took a LOT longer than they said it would due to pivot bolts being mislaid/lost during the process, although the repair seems very well done and I've also read good reports about Target Compostites

Personally, that one would be the only one that puts me off, just because it appears to be more than just the top layer.

I am not a carbon layup expert though, it might be repairable / not a problem.

My Carbon Bronson had pretty much an identical strike in the identical place but not quite as deep, its just a lump that sits facing the right direction for a strike. Can't comment on the safety aspect but I carried on riding it but it wasn't quite that bad.

My old Bronson was all chewed up in the same area of the lower link. Positioned perfectly to get smacked about - it never caused me any issues. It's pretty built up and tough round that part of the bike and always felt solid

That part specifically wouldn't bother me, but it's a frame that's clearly seen some use.

So, err,

Tbh, it looks tatty, but as long as the price reflects that, I’d buy that,

Seems like a good price to me - Enjoy.

Selaciosa that's good to know. I'm going to go and view it this evening. Hopefully the carbon isn't torn or cracked. If it's not the superficial damage won't bother me as it will get rode

That Pinkbike video is painful to watch!
I notice they don't test hitting the BB shell...

jimdubleyou that's the one troubling me. On the photo it kind looks like a bit of the carbon has chopped away, but it could just be the photo. I think if the carbon is chipped or frayed there it will be a no go.

pothead that's the part that's troubling me. It's hard to tell from the photo if it's just badly chopped paint or if the carbon itself is damaged. I don't want to buy it yo spend Moor money getting it fixed. If I do buy the bike I would just put a few layers of superglue or jb weld over the areas, give them a little sand and then touch them up with some paint.

Larry_Lamb to be fair, paint chips and scratches don't mither me at all. It's more if the carbon is damaged I guess and how much it can effect the integrity of the frame.

Just been to check it out. The part I was concerned about on the linkage was too bad. It was like a chip out if the actual carbon. When I run my fingers over it a small piece actually fell off it. So I passed on it.cheers for everyone's help

I’ve had two bronson frames replaced. They were much worse than that. I always think if you can see loose fibres then it’s finished. These all look like that have chipped resin only.

gkeeffe the part on the linkage was actually a small chunk taken out of the carbon. When I rubbed my finger over it a small piece of carbon fell out if it. Pissed me off as I asked thoroughly about all the marks and the seller assured me they were all just paint chips. But whilst I was viewing it and I mentioned that part and a bit falling out she kept very quite. And then later mentioned that it's easy to get someone to fix it. She even had her brother with her who worked in a bike shop that seemed to be very quite on the whole matter of it not just being paint chips. They knew they where selling a dog of a frame.

To be fair to them they sent you some really good pics of the areas, not trying to hide it, offered it at a bargain basement point, and I'm not really sure what you expected her to say about the damage?. I know a fair few folks that work in bike shops that haven't a clue about carbon repair either, her brother maybe falls into that category.

There's no shortage of shop folk that think they're experts on everything right enough! 🙂

You could ask Santa Cruz US (not jungle) they're really honest.

They've reduced it from 1800 to 1300 by email? That's a lot. Suggests that it's a dog, especially in these covid times where bikes are selling fast.

The bikes been ridden a lot and probably very hard. If the frame is that bad then the rest of it will probably be in the same condition.

Bearings, forks, shock, gears.

I'd walk away too and look for something else. We are in September, people will soon stop buying bikes and probably start selling the bikes they bought because everyone else was. Just like toilet paper!

It will be a buyers market again with massive supply. Just wait for the next one.

Can't see it.

Just spoke to the local madison rep, was telling me that both big S's have said that they won't be able to supply all manufacturers with kit for their 2021 frames. God knows how they'll prioritise, the big guys with the tightest contracts/lawyers I'd imagine.

Looks fine, no damaged carbon fibres from what i can see zooming in, the paints gone, the lacquers gone and some of the resin has chipped away, but first thing i'd do if i got that bike is do the local repairs of the linkage, with a resin/lacquer/paint and stick some outer protection on there.

Carbon Fibre is one of those materials everyone fears due to damage, but does take a lot to actually get through the layers of protection there, when it does you can tell by the sound that it's pretty much got a problem.

agree the part on the bottom of the bearing swingarm was definitley damaged cat on. There was a chunk taken out and when I rubbed my finger over a piece of carbon came loose
