I currently have an Evil Following MB but im keen to do some more xc racing. The Following now is just too much bike for the riding i am / want to do. I like the look of the Blur, but am wondering if with a 120 34 step cast fork it can double up for trail fun as well as xc race fun. Something ligh and nimble but also able to handle light-med trail duties.
Anyone using it for this or has any other recommendations for 25lb build?
Cheers
Oli
Theee are a growing number of bikes that fit the bill for this type of job.
I have a Pivot Mach429sl which works well for most things.
Also worth looking at are the Orbea Oiz TR, SC Blur, Rocky Mountain Element, Scott Spark (probably), Yetis 100mm Race machine. And I expect a few more.
Good luck and and have fun.
I think terrahawk has one and he's super quick around Kirroughtree etc.
I personally have a Tallyboy with reduced travel Pikes, used for Peak District trails, MTB marathon and XC races (I don't trouble the podium, but it's not the bike holding me back).
Anyone currently riding the Blur that can give their views?
I also have a mach429sl, and as well as being a rapid (for me) race bike, it does a brilliant job of being a trail bike.
a mate has a Spesh epic, built to be a trail bike (wide bars, short stem, bigger tyres etc) and loves it.
I’ve an Intense Sniper SL - the XC rather than trail version - I think it’s an awesome bike.
My thoughts on it are towards the bottom of the page:

Ive raced XC on many a bike and from HT's to Tallboy 2's etc. I had a trek Topfuel 9.9SL which was mint, but the blur is better, its lighter than the trek by about 20gms but slightly more relaxed and the seat tube is a better angle than the trek.
The Spesh - Has the brain shock - awful
Rocky Mountain Element - heavy
Yeti - Heavy
Spark - Good
Pivot - OK
You can't go wrong with it, mine has built up a 21lbs or just over with sensible tyres.
Drop me an email if you have any questions about it.
It’s a brilliant bike - got one earlier this year and have since raced it at glentress 7, ironbike, peaks mtb marathon etc. Some of the days at ironbike were pretty big (110km/5000m climb) with some pretty technical descending and it definitely looked after me! Build quality I think is a cut above the competition - lifetime warranty too. Definitely worth trying to keep it light if you can - 21/2 pounds is possible with a dropper depending on tyres as Eddie said, still using reliable bits.
I lifted a Blur the other day and it was lighter than my carbon hardtail! This is the sort of bike I'll be wanting next when I sell my Hightower.
I got mine in May, 100mm SC fork with a dropper post. I have ridden in the peak district, exmoor, pyrenees ect. I'm not the best mountain biker in the world but it does everything my 5010 did and is lighter and quicker uphill.
I think if I was bombing down stuff it would occasionally be sketchy on steep rocky stuff at speed but it gets down everything I have thrown at it. Fitting the 34 120mm SC would make it more capable I would probably have picked the TR version if it was available when I bought mine.
Sounds ace. very temped. Looks like there are a host of 100-120 bikes coming out in the next month or so. Need to try this alongside the new Orbea TR and Whyte s120
Not ridden the Blur (yet) but I've had the pleasure of an Intense Sniper (XC version) the last couple of days. It's unbelievably quick. Best XC bike I've ridden by some margin. Also ridden the Yeti SB100 which is also and amazing bike, but more of a trail bike which with XC characteristics than an all-out race machine. I always thought I'd eventually buy a Blur but after riding the Sniper I'm not so sure.
Where did you demo the sniper? Challenge is getting to places where i can demo them all
Like the look of the Yeti but for 100mm of ravel its not very light
I've been riding the Sniper they have on test here Not sure where you can demo one. Intense have moved to direct sales so you might have to take a punt. If you want a full-on fast race bike though, I can highly recommend it. I really want to try the trail version, which will almost certainly be a bit friendlier for everyday use, but curious as to how the bigger forks blunt it's racyness.
I'd be really keen to hear peoples thoughts on the sniper vs blur in trail versions. The sniper gets very slack but i would look to reduce the HA by fitting an angle set. 66 degrees seems very slack. 68 would be perfect. Does the trail version of the sniper get 120mm out back - looks like it when buying frame only. How does the sniper frame compared to the blue in terms of sturdyness / flex
@olibluegoat the Sniper is 67.5 in XC guise - you can also alter the handling by running a different fork offset, though how noticeable that'll actually be is debatable. FYI I run my Sniper with a 65mm stem & a 51mm offset, Intense spec a 50mm stem & 44mm offset. The changes I've made slow the handling down a touch, if I've got it right..
66 does seem very slack for a bike with only 120mm - maybe you're better suited to the XC if your concerned about the HA on the Trail? As yet I've not had a problem with my XC though I do wonder about a SC 34 with 100mm as the SC 32 is a bit twangy..
The Trail gets 120mm & the XC gets 100mm.
The frame certainly seems stiff enough compared to my old Trek Top Fuel SL.
Just wondering if the 120 out back may just give me a bit more versatility to allow me to use it as my very day xc/ trail bike as well as race bike .Anyone compared the sniper blur together ?
I've had my SC Blur CC frame on order since first week of June and think it's only just close to arriving in the UK, that'll be the first customer UK shipment arrival of the CC frames. Be aware that there's a loooong waiting list on the frames - size S and L are still currently a 5 month waiting list for the frame only CC model I believe!
Really. Thats rubbish. Why so long. That may be a blur out of the window then although the sniper is also a long wait time. Anyone know wher i can demo a sniper?
