A little far from home for most of you, but if anyone's been to Chamonix to go riding, or wants to go to Chamonix riding, or just generally likes the idea of helping another riding community, we could do with some signatures!
There is an attempt being made to build a 14Km long, bitumen topped logging road though the Les Houches forest, away from the ski area and through some of the most beautiful old growth beech forest. The road, and the 55 tonne logging trucks that will use it, will cause huge environmental damage to the forest, valley and general environment and untold disruption to the rare species that call it home. It also flies in the face of the current small scale management and harvesting of the forest.
More importantly than saving the endangered woodpeckers and owls and centuries old beech forest though, there are loads of amazing trails that work their way down from the Prarion lift to Vaudagne, Servoz and St Gervais that will be lost forever. Les Houches has become the centre of Chamonix biking recently and the mix of established walking paths and rider build trails is flippin' amazing. And potentially about to be lost.
The Chamonix community came together last month to object in writing and in person during the official consultation process, and now we hope to step this up as the November inter council meeting approaches, so if we could spare a minute of your time, please help us save this forest for everyone to still enjoy in the future. Cheers!
Done. Not been to Cham riding since 2016 but heard loads has gone on at that end of the valley so it would be a shame to lose it.
Thanks Burchy1
Two very different views of the trails that could be lost behind Les Houches...
Dan Milner's weekend ride to hit the trails maybe the last time:
And 50to01 visiting in the summer, from 3mins in all the forest stuff is Les Houches, although the trails in the last minute or 2 are the most threatened: https://www.pinkbike.com/news/video-the-50to01-crew-head-to-the-italian-alps-for-a-wild-riding-adventure.html
Done.
Got to think about them owls.
Signed. Stayed in Les Houches many many times, summer and winter, a great place to visit and a real shame if any of the natural environment is damaged, it will never return. Did a great walk from the village centre thru the forest to St Gervais a few years ago, be terrible to lose that.
