I’m lucky enough to be travelling out to Oregon, USA in a weeks time to see my Dad.

I’ll be taking the bike and more than likely be riding on my own in areas with no mobile coverage.

Would it be prudent of me to get hold of a satellite tracker if the worst happens, it’s unlikely I’ll need it in the U.K.

Sounds like it if it's causing you concern. Although, unless you stick near towns, it's likely you ride in lots of places with poor or zero mobile coverage in the UK.

Garmin Inreach or Spot Tracker are the 2 options - you buy the device and then have to take out a subscription. Probably cheaper to buy the device in the US as it’s £ = $ pricing.

If it's a one-off trip, then will definitely be cheaper to hire one.

2nd hand Spot Gen 3 is about £30 on Ebay and then you can sign up for the Flex plan at £15+VAT/month and just have service for a month or two.

There's also an activation fee, which is £30 or so...

For a one off trip, best option is probably to rent.

Garmin Inreach

Worth noting that the battery life is limited on these. No problem if you're just heading out for a ride. If you plan on heading out for more than a day, you need to think about how to charge it.

Spot tracker is good for a few days. You'll probably want a Gen3 or Gen4, that can send messages to contacts, or SOS.

When you fall down a crack you might not get a signal 🙂

Sucked it up and bought an inreach mini, should be able to resell it after the trip or keep it.
