Seen an aluminium frame for a good price.

Anybody got any good or bad things to say about them before I push the button?

Cheers

They're great. Not quite as long and slack as some newer stuff, but the still ride really well. New one being launched this week in Peru I believe so I'd expect old ones to drop in price unless they already have.

Where's this from? I have a mate who is waiting patiently but thinking about buying elsewhere if SC don't get a move on...

The rumour mill is all about a long, low, slack (probably 29er) Tallboy LT replacement possibly called a "Hightower". Not sure about any of that but that's what seems to be up in various places

riding one here on Instagram[/url]

Rumour has it that it that the Hightower LT will be 130mm travel, long and slack with boost hubs so 27.5+ compatible..

Lots of excitement on the MTBR SC forum. Shipping next month apparently.

I've had an LTc for about 2.5 years and really like it - I have other bikes, both 26 and 29ers, but the LTc is still 'the special one' 🙂 OK, so it's maybe not the latest long top tube and slackness, but that doesn't stop them being a brilliant bike. Before I bought my frame I had a couple of demo days switching between the Alu and carbon; because of the daft prices for the carbon frames, I was more interested in the aluminium - however, I felt there was a much big difference in ride feel than other brands Alu-carbon models, so went for the carbon.

I use my LTc regularly on local Peak District trails, and have been to a few Welsh & Scottish trail centres on it, as well as a trips to the Dolomites & Austrian Alps. Last time I was in North Italy, I spent a few hours uplifting on DH trails and I was pleasantly surprised by how well the bike (& I) coped! Felt rather smug at the base station bar, as all the other riders coming down were on DH bikes (they were probably going twice as fast as me tho;).

My advice would be, if you're on the borderline between frame sizes, go up one. If you're on the correct sized frame, don't go too short with the stem - I've worked my way down in increments from 70mm stem with 750mm bars to 35mm with 800mm and found that the short stem led to compromised handling and grip. I've ended up settling on 60mm stem with 760mm bars for Alpine trips and 70mm stem for all UK riding.

If you're an aggressive or 80kg plus rider, I'd also recommend sticking some strong stiff wheels on (I've tried bling you carbon wheels, but have now settled on Mavic Crossmax XLs, which are excellent). I've had the shock Push tuned, with quite a firm tune, which has improved small fast bump performance, but otherwise the suspension and chassis is standard, i.e. 140mm fork and standard (non offset) headset.

HTH

I had a decent test on the fancy carbon one and was distinctly underwhelmed. It felt cramped and much heavier than expected. I honestly couldn't think of any part of the ride it felt particularly good at. Put me right off Santa Cruz.

Cheers for the replies.
Would you recommend a medium or large then at 5' 9"

Cheers

Medium I'd say. I'm 6' and rode a large. Maybe check the geo charts as the large will be longer - juts make sure the stand over height is ok.

I reckon a medium would be OK for your height, but depending on your inside leg measurement, a large might be worth a try if you try for size first. IMO, Santa Cruz sizing chart is about an inch out, which woul put you right on the borderline of M/L.

I guess it depends what you're after from the bike; if you want something relatively nimble (for a longish travel 29er) that you can chuck around, go medium and maybe try a '60-70 stem 750ish bars. If you really want to prioritise stability for faster DH tracks and straight lining rock gardens, a large with short stem and wider bars might be better.

Oh, regarding the reply from someone who didn't like the bike - that might be down to sag set up on the shock. IME, the LTc has a relatively narrow window of shock pressure where the bike feels stellar....this surprised me after my Blur TR, which rides well at a wider range of pressure. I also had to send my Push tuned shock back for adjustment, as it rode like a dog with the initial plush tune that TF fitted (much worse than pre-Push tune). Now TF have changed the tune, it rides better than before.

p.s. I'm 6', 34" inside leg and ride a large - feels like borderline L - XL, but I much the preferred handling balance and manoeuvrability of the large.

This 29er/27.5+ thing is starting to annoy me now. There is around a 7mm difference in radius, so switching from one to the other will raise/lower the BB by 7mm, which is enough to be quite noticable in my experience. So, you either compromise the 29er (so everybody agrees that the 27.5+ is much better!) or optimise the design for 29er wheels (in which case the BB may be too low to run 27.5+). Unless you use some sort of geometry changing chips, trying to make a bike compatible with both "standards" just sounds like a victory for the marketing guys to me. Decide what wheel size you are going to run and design your bike around that.

They are just taking advantage of the fact most of us buyers are a bit thick and don't look in to the finer details if something is new enough and shiny enough 😉

I've not measured but 27+ tyres will have a larger cross section minimising the bb drop?

I had a medium nomad but sold it as it was too short. I'm 5'10" so would always go large with a shorter stem on SC.

If its the frame I think it is it would have been sold ages ago if it were a large.

The LTC's got rave reviews in What mtb. They said it would reset what you thought was possible and a true benchmark raising bike. It was the top pick in the charts at the mag for years but has been knocked off now

A good number of pics doing the rounds now, looks very much like a 29 / 27.5+ frame (pics of the bikes with both wheel sizes), very low standover, long TT and single front ring only rear triangle (a la Nomad).

Still not sure of travel although it would appear that the 29'ers look like they're running 140mm 29 Pikes. Not keen on the gloss red colour scheme but the alternative matte carbon / orange & sky blue looks not dissimilar to the current Nomad colour scheme.

Looking forward to the official details on 2nd Feb (& I presume STW Barney's write up)! 😉
