The thing is, I have a Tallboy 3. In many ways, this is the perfect bike for me, and I really enjoy riding it. The only issue is that I am more of a grinder than a spinner, and the 30 tooth chainring in front is a bit small for me. Ideally, I would like to fit a 34 tooth chanring, but I am worried about chainstay clearance. Has any of you guys tried a 34 tooth chainring, and how did it go? The crankset is a Raceface Cinch model, and the bike is running a 148 mm rear end.

Normally, I would just get a chainring and give it a try... but there are no 34 tooth cinch chainring in stock near me, and I would like to avoid having to post a chainring halfway across Europe if it doesen't fit!

Thanks in advance!

I can't believe SC would release a model that was incompatible with a very standard chainring size. The only caveat is that if you run a small (E.g. your 30t chainring) you might get away with a non-Boost chainring whereas for bigger size you'd need to get a Boost one (it's a Boost frame after all).

Did the RF crankset come on the bike? Is the current chainring a non-Boost one?

You could do some maths to determine how much bigger (radius) a 34 vs 30t would likely be.

TLDR: I'd put money on a 34t Boost chainring fitting no problem.

EDIT: This might be useful : https://www.wolftoothcomponents.com/pages/chainring-diameter-by-tooth-count. A (Wolftooth) 34t ring is 16mm bigger diameter than a 30t. 8mm radius difference, so assuming the same chainring offset (Boost vs Non-boost), the chainring would be 8mm closer* to the chainstay.

*Along the plane of the chainring

Yes, I have a Shimano XT chainset with 34 at the front on my Tallboy 3 and there’s plenty of clearance.

have you tried typing 'cinch chainring' on chain reaction
they have 34T in both raceface and blackspire branded
£19.99 upto £55 on RF, or £75 wolftooth

GF has a TB3, non boost cranks (as it was a warrant replacement for a TB2) and has a 32 on there. So 32 is definitely possible.

I too doubt that a short travel 29er released when 1x12 50+ tooth cassettes were a thing would be incapable of using a 34 tooth chainring.

This is excellent news! I will give it a go, seems like it should work.

I am indeed based in Denmark, and while that is not halfway across Europe, it is still a major PITA to ship things back and forth. For example, if I buy something in Germany, it will cost me 5 euros to have it sent to me. Owing to ridiculous Danish postage prices, it would cost about 4 to 5 times that to return any goods to Germany if they don't fit.

Thank you very much for your help!
