Thinking of treating myself to some Carbon hoops.

What is the opinion of the STW massive?

Santa cruz reserve 27.5 rims with DT Swiss 350 hubs?

Or Nobl TR33 Rims with Nobl/Onyx instant engagement sprag clutch hubs?

Let me know your thoughts?

I have some SC reserve wheels on dt swiss hubs. Very much likey. They ride pretty much like a set of alloy rims but much lighter and hopefully no dents to worry about.

I also have some Stans Bravo wheels. The hubs aren't as good in my opinion (A fair bit more rolling resistance) but a similar ride to the SC wheels.

Time will tell which are top dog. The one thing I would say about the SC wheels is that they are boost only, which was wee tad annoying and required some new forks. Grr.

What kind of rider are you? how hard are you on kit and what are you looking to gain from this?

Carbon doesn't always mean light and those are two fairly hefty offerings (the SC's are 1750 grams for 27.5" 30 mm) that are going to be fairly stiff in use.

If you're a wheel-smashing enduro gnar beast then that may make them ideal but neither would be my first choice for longer distance riding.

I have a set of Pure Components C33 rims on Hope Pro4 (I believe the rims are manufactured at same place as Nobl rims and that being Light Bicycle apparently).  They 29 flavour and so far been really good, but I have never had carbon before so can't compare really. Have a look on Pure Components site they are UK based and you can create your own wheelset etc

The Nobl set will come in at about 1650g but the main draw is the quiet and instant engagement hubs.

Santa Cruz main draw is warranty. DT Swiss hubs will be fine.

What would be your ideas for go-to wheelsets for trail and some bike park. I’m not going massive. I am buying boost.

The nobl sets do have a good rep for not being super stiff.

I’ve got Nobl hubs and rims (TR33).  The instant engagement is bloody brilliant.  They also roll phenomenally well.

How long have you had them mate? Where did you buy them? Are they super stiff? What bike have you got them on and what full setup did you buy?

cheers and sorry for all the questions

No worries, built by Kevin Head at Evolution cycles Eastbourne  TR33 on Nobl hubs (non boost), fitted to a Speccy Enduro.  The spokes are errr black ones he recommended with brass nipples (we have issues with sea air attacking allloy nipples).  I’ve ridden then all over the Downs locally, clattered off flints, they’ve been to Dartmoor and Cannock and shrugged off the rockiness.

They seem to roll better than any wheelset I’ve ever had.  Yes they are stiffer than the alloy Rovals it came with but after speaking to both Kev and the people at Nobl they recommended the 33’s over the 36’s as for my build, 12st ish kitted up, and where I ride they’d be far too stiff.

I may have mentioned the instant pickup once or twice on STW before but it’s amazing and everyone who has tried them loves it.  Yes they are heavier than an industry 9 or Hope hub but it’s centre of rotation and I’ll take the weight penalty for the drive.

Give Kev a bell (mention me) or the people at Nobl for more info and build recommendations.

I think if you're going carbon you want better hubs than 350s. But I'd go Santa Cruz for the warranty. What ratchet do you get in the hubs?

Thanks mate. I am speaking to kev. I’m your weight as well. Not sure I can mention I’ve spoken to Ming the Merciless, although could wear my Flash Gordon outfit I suppose!

Have you had them long?

cheers

I've got SC Reserve 27s on my Hightower (29er). I love how they ride! I've always seen posts on forums saying wheels are a big upgrade, but I've had Hope, cheaper Shimano hubs on WTB rims, Rovals etc and never noticed much difference between them.

The Reserve are tough too. I destroyed a tyre on a rock on Sunday (straight through tread, out near the bead and hit the rim very hard). There was a slight chip in the lacquer...

Also, SC will replace it within 24 hours if you manage to break one whilst riding. I went for the DT Swiss hubs because I really didn't see the value of spending another £300 on the I9. The 350s are ace.

I can't say I've ever found them too stiff. Not all carbon wheels are created equally. These aren't just Chinese copies of other rims.
