Hi, I have an old Santa Cruz 5010, the very first version that came out but think it is about time for a replacement. For obvious reasons it's difficult to get to demo any bikes at the moment so wondered whether anyone on here owns a new 5010? If so how do you like it?
Has anyone ridden the Bronson back to back with the 5010? If so, how did it compare? I like the idea of a bit of extra travel but I don't want to loose the nimbleness of the 5010 or the fantastic climbing ability.
Hi, have you tried to get a demo? There is a demo fleet around which you can book through your local SC dealer. You have to pay, but it’s often refunded if you make a purchase (mine was). I went from a 2016 Bronson to 2021 Santa Cruz. I love it.
Yes tried to demo and nearest dealer does do demo days but looks like I've missed them this year. Do you mean you have a 2021 Bronson? How does it climb?
The new VPP bikes all climb really well. Even my old V4 Nomad! The new 5010 looks a great bike if you don't want to go big wheels.
I love my 5010 for it's nimbleness. I came from a 160mm bike and it feels so much easier to control it and place it precisely. It's very capable too, especially for the super techy, slow, borderline unrideable stuff I like. BUT I think for most people (including, probably), a 29er will be a more sensible choice.
I'm unconvinced about the new Bronson. For no reason other than that mullet bikes look like a hack. So I think your choice is between 5010 and Tallboy/Hightower.
I would add, RE Santa Cruz...they really do not represent good value at the moment components wise. My girlfriend bought a Tallboy at the start of lockdown. It was just over 4k and the build kit was bad value then. The same bike is now almost 5 grand! it is a nice bike though to be sure and a frame worth keeping.
I recently moved from a 2016 Yeti Sb5c to the 2022 spec SC 5010. So far I've been very impressed with it. The frame and shock definitely weigh more than the Yeti, but I don't think I've noticed it on the trail. What I have appreciated is the extra reach and stability from the longer wheelbase and slacker head angle. However SC have managed to keep the 5010 feeling very responsive and lively, which is probably due to the short chainstays. Overall I'm very happy.
One thing to remember is the new Bronson is now a mullet, not 27.5 like the 5010.

You're not wrong. I was going to buy a Hightower or a Bronson a few months ago when I was showered with insurance money after a break in.
I was standing in the shop when I had a moment of clarity and realised I was about to spend 7.5k on a plastic bike just to get a half decent spec.
Instead I got a top spec Norco, a DJ bike and pocketed over a grand.
None of this is relevant to the OP. The 5010 does look lovely and the yellow Bronson which I wasn't too fussed about online is actually very sparkly in the sun. It looks mint and I'm sure it'll be fun to ride.
Follow pedal and spoke on insta, they often have 5010s pop up.
