Not sure what to fit up front on this so i thought i would ask on here to see if people could share chainset, bottom bracket, adaptor and front mech set-ups! I'm thinking double shimano but if it means less hassle with something like x9.. then it would be good to hear yer stories!
Theres a few options out there that i like, but i would like to hear from folk to see how it all went together at the end of the build with the adaptors/bb etc.
Thanks folks
Martin

Ive used XTR with the SRAM PFBB30 and Problem solvers adaptors as recommended on the Salsa blog spearfish buildup page. Works ok but i have had issues with chainsuck causing the chain to jam between the big ring and the chainstay. Solved it by squeezing in a small shim, thankfully there was just enough adjustment to make it work. I think a proper BB30 crank has to be the way forward if you can.
my fish came with fsa comet chainset and adaptors to fit.i also suffered abit of chainsuck on one occasion.ive now swapped to xo carbon bb30 chainset and done away with the adaptors.as of yet no problems at all and in the looks department are way better.
I thought Hope and solved the BB reliability problem with their standard external offering. I thought rubbish BB's badly sealed BB's were a thing of the past. The spearfish seems like a fantasic bike so why spoil it with dodgy new un-tried standard?
You should ask at your local lbs. There's a good mechanic in there who knows all this sort of stuff...
The boss has a Spearfish.
😆
Thanks folks. Stato, its this "i have solved it" bit i am not keen on. We shouldn't be solving anything. I am not having a go at you or the way you got around it all, its just something that shouldn't be a problem in 2011/12!
I have fitted a pfbb30,10 spd xt chainset and wheels manufacturing adaptors to one a while back and although it shifts very well and is causing the owner no problems at all, I seem to remember the preload being a bit of a pain when fitting the chainset.Probably the sram unit with the xt chainset. I cant remember exactly what all was put in there but i do remember it not being straight forward.
What i do remember is that I didn't fancy an issue with the chainset/bb unit on my own bike before it even leaves the workstand. These parts should go together with no issues these days.. but it seems that there's a few baw aches around with this bb diameter.
Just found this on the salsa site.
Side Note: Wheel's Manufacturing also makes an adapter cup for running 24mm spindle cranks on BB30 bottom brackets. This adapter will not technically work on a PFBB30 bottom bracket. The Wheel's cups are sized to rest directly against BB30 bearings. SRAM's PFBB30 bottom bracket has those fancy seals and dust caps, not to mention the bearings themselves are in a *slightly* different location in the BB. If you were to install the Wheel's Mfg adapters on the PFBB30 bottom bracket, the overall width is about 3.3mm wider than the width the cranks are designed to install across.
So problem solvers adaptors it is then..
sram press fit bb, fsa afterburner bb30 27/40, sram x7 mech. the bb and crank were not designed to go together but they work if you remove a couple of seals from the bb. there is a thread on mtbr, i believe its mentioned above. i don't know if the removal of seals will effect the lifespan of the bb because i've not done much riding on it yet, but the sram unit is cheap to replace.
