A couple of months ago I decided to build myself a bike after breaking a number in the months previously. The 2011 M4 framed rockhopper has a sid fork, dt swiss wheels, X0 and X9 drivetrain and rides great. And it's still in 1 piece after a few hundred miles which is unheard of for me! Filled with confidence I decided to build a full sus bike. Problem is, unlike with the rockhopper build, I didn't stick to the "tried and tested" when buying the forks.
The 2011 spearfish has 100mm front and 80mm rear travel, and 46 mm offset fork I believe. I have bought a shiny new 110mm 51mm offset Revelation G2 with maxle. I believed that changing the head angle slightly wouldn't matter too much and the extra 10mm travel would only change geometry slightly. I thought that the G2 forks may slacken the head angle as salsa had done for the 2012 model. Now I am second guessing myself.
After trawling the net for an hour, I haven't found a single account of anyone running a set of revolutions on an original spearfish frame or a bigger offset fork. Is this because it would change the geometry too much?
I can probably add an internal spacer to reduce travel down to 100mm if needed, do you think this is necessary.
Plan to use this bike for long xc rides, canal paths and gnarly trails and will need to be able to climb well.
Any help appreciated as I plan to start the build in the next 2 days, all parts here except wheels which are on a flight from Germany as we speak. Should I sell the revs and get a reba/sid? Am I overthinking this or is it an issue?
Thanks in advance.
