You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
On an impulse I bought one of the £250 Salsa Mukluk frame from Billys that have been on sale and am trying to go about kitting it out using parts I have, but finding it difficult even finding out basic info on Salsa website or others.
Having moved to north Norfolk, actual mountain biking is non-existent really, but want we are not lacking in is beaches and sand dunes, so thought the FB would be a giggle, so any help would be appreciated-
- Best tyres for knocking about in sand, see a lot of stating Endomorph rear, Larry front is a good combo?
- Any 100mm BB got a reputation for standing up better to sand than others?
- Bearing in mind it'll be ridden mostly on beaches, best to use the Deore brakes I have already knocking about, or cable brakes better?
- I'm of average fitness, 1 x 10 with 30t front ring or one of the 36/22 Raceface 2x10 cranksets?
- Anyone used these German rims (which just sounds wrong)?
http://www.robsson.de/en/robsson-alloy-rim-rm80-26-silver-bright-anodized-3.html , any good mated to the Hope Hubs?
- Tried searching for the thread, but someone had bought glow-in-dark Gorilla Tape or similar for rims when they were drilled, anyone got the thread or where it can be bought?
- Finally, seatpost and seatclamp size as Salsa site doesn't seem to say?
Sorry for all the questions, but it is a bit of a minefield.
You know Scud - I was going to ask exactly the same questions 8)
UK fat bike forum is useful resource. The Robson rims can be drilled out with 32mm holesaw, don't drill where the rims are joined. 1x10 should be fine for flat and beach riding and I'd go with the Deere brakes as you already have them and replace when they die. You will need 170mm rear hub and 135 front, may work out cheaper to buy on-one fatty wheeler unless you can build your own wheels. They are great for exploring rides rather than long distance.
Andy & Scud....i knew it wouldn't be long before you joined the Fat Club 🙂
Raceface do two types of Fat crank, one about £120, the other £180
Looking forward to drinking lots of Norfolk ale and falling off pissed on some sand 🙂
Sounds like a plan Jon!
The BB on my RaceFace cranks lasted about two years. Some of that included a bit of "dunking".
Any Tyres with Larry on them are perfect for sand, sandy/loam surfaces,
I also use Nates and ideal once onto mud flats or salt marshes,
Defo go 2x 9 or 2x10 if you want to ride through dunes, make the most of where these bikes can go 🙂
Air the tyres down to around 8-9 psi 😉
Be prepared for expense.
I'm awaiting a Puffin frame 🙂
I went into the fat eyes open that the "bits" come with a premium.
cranks can be had with an external bb for around £100.
I've gone with Surly rims and hope hubs. Cheaper rims can be had but I didn't want the faff of drilling them!
Thanks guys
Oh meant to ask also, if I went down the Surly rims route, Large Marge or Rolling Daryl?
The Robson rims are supposed to be pretty good. Mucho discussion over here Robson rims
And if you're riding lots of sand go for the Darryl
I've built a few fat wheels using the Robson 80mm rims, drilled and non drilled, never had a problem, out of the box the come in at around 1000gms,drilled you can get down to 700-750gms easily enough.
they do 80's and 100's.
use a set myself,2yrs use,no issues.
if you ride beaches/dunes,hose bike thoroughly after every ride ! or it won't work next time 😉
Puffin frame coming for me too - my car cost less than the Hope hubs and Rolling Daryl rim combo 🙁
Liking the sound of that Norfolk ale! Kinda wish I had joined the Puffin kickstarter. Oh well dibs when you sell BoJo 😉
Am looking at those Robsson rims with interest. 80mm on the mukluc sounds like a good approach for general riding from what I have read so far? Quite fancy silver, but then powder coated would work as well. 8)
Keef are they easy to set up tubeless please?
If the Mukluk uses a 100mm BB then you can get a Howitzer bb and cranks for less than £100
However they're pretty heavy and the bearings are non replaceable so they're not without their drawbacks
Andy, yup ghetto tubeless works well with them.
Cool thanks Keef
