I'm looking at getting a Salsa Cutthroat v2 frameset and am trying to figure out possible 2x gearing.
What is the smallest inner chainring that can be installed with a 2x setup where the chain doesn't hit the chainstays? E.g. would a 26T or 28T fit as the small ring?

Salsa's website says 30-46, but I wonder if that's just because the Easton chainrings they use in their builds have that as the smallest available size. It's possible to mount much smaller chainrings using the RaceFace 2x chinch boost spider. However, the chain will definitely hit the chainstays if you go too small.

Unfortunately Salsa isn't responding to my questions, so I hope to find the answer here.

Salsa didn't help me either. Same generic response. I did my own measurements and took a punt

I can tell you that although it doesn't officially fit.

Xtr 28/38 fits and works a treat

Been running this set up for 6 months now. Works grand. Just be sure you locktite the nut holding the mech hanger/axle in place as it loves to come loose and is salsa proprietory - the lads at Lyon (importer) were really helpful

Is it the chain clattering off the bottom of the dropped chainstay you are worried about?

I reckoned a 26 would run on the drop of the stay as it left the ring.

Thanks, that's great to hear a 28 would work.l and a 26 won't.

How did you manage to install that XTR spindle though? I thought only the RaceFace Aeffect R fit.

Not at all.

I would rather walk than have another raceface cranks the atlas on my fat bike are hateful things.

The answer is lots of reasearch and checking out q factors and mocking up with cranks I have and rings I have .

I have a hope 24mm BB in there

These are the 9120 trails rather than the 9000 race. They have a wider qfactor.

Clearance is tighter than I would like but after 6 months of abuse I'm not seeing any indications that it's an issue.

Plenty fast lads seem to run them and weightweenies certainly has a few.

Chickened out on middleburns as the q factor was tighter even though they look awesome. + Their stock was poor and reminded me why I ditched duo back in the day -poor spares availability

Word to the wise though - I'm aware that by having that xtr chainset on my chances of finding rings to fit in the wild are less than NIL.

Almost forgot.

You'll need a front mech dropper. I use the zero degree bikingreen one off eBay for about 20 quid. It works grand.- I believe this is why salsa say 30/48 as the front mech physically won't go low enough

Thanks a ton for all the info (and the amazing pictures above)! This really helps a lot.

Out of curiosity, what's the issue you're having with your RaceFace cranks (specifically asking about the cranks, I'm not planning on using their BB)?

stupidly high torques to fit and remove.

The requirement to shim it - rather than it be a precision fit

The square edges by my angles.
