Any one riding these? looking to replace some cheap 3T Pretty narrow standard bars, I'm looking at these as they aren't that far from the norm, The other two designs are a bit too flared for my likes.
the 46cm width is what i'm really interested in and i,m hoping this might relieve the aching in my shoulders and neck a tad,
I am, the 46cms ones too. They don't seem to have helped the pain in my neck and shoulders, but I don't know know exactly causing it or what's causing yours!
Or if there's anything I can really help with!?
Got them on my RLT9 and have been happy with them - the slight flare just gives me a bit more stability & confidence on the drops.
I like mine.went from compact ergo bars to them.
Feel a lot more confident, comfier in the drops, and I like the fact I can see the flare when looking down at them
I've got a set of 44cm wide ones for sale £30 posted if interested.
I think confident is a good way to describe how these feel. However bear in mind the 46 are wider than what you probably have so you may need a higher rise or shorter stem to get them into a comfortable position as the width does draw you forward a little.
If you are looking at the Cowbells, the Ritchey EvoMax Comp bars might be worth a look too, They are a 12degree flare which I think is the same as the cowbells. The Ritcheys can be had for £41 online, not sure how that compares to the cowbells though.
I have them on my bike, I like them feel like a normal bar on the Hoods but a bit more comfortable on the drops. Shand have recently released a pair of flared drops too maybe worth a look
Thanks all,
Quirrel, that's the important bit, they look good,
Cloudnine, I'll pass thanks as once they are wrapped in bar tape I'll regret it and then suffer like I have with these.
As for the stem, I'm 90mm I think and 10 deg rise? What will change is it the curve on the bar drop where the hoods mount up?
Thanks
xyeti I ran cowbell 3s on my race bikes for a couple of years til an OTB bent the flare in on one side. Actually I carried on racing with them and only replaced them last week.
Do you ride on the drops a lot descending or on the hoods?
If you ride on the drops then the cowbells and bell laps, and similar flared bars can help with the control on descents.
If you are running a 90mm stem and have it flipped up then is your top tube length too long?
The cowbells are wide bars, make no mistake.
Is your aching coming from 'winging' with your shoulders or dropping your head and neck into your back and letting your shoulders pull together?
I found these Zipp Service Course 80 bars very comfy and well priced and they are now on the cx race bike. Only 4' flare but it feels very nice on the drops and hoods.
For reference I also suffer with shoulder and neck pain after a torn shoulder and broken collarbone, and these do seem to help mitigate that.
Shedbrewed, I'm descending on the hoods, I'm sure this would change if I were to fit these as it's difficult to control from the drops on my fore arms, I'm happy on the drops though, not really thought about it until now. As for riding I'd say I'm riding with my head and neck into my shoulders, snapped clavicals and seperated shoulders aren't helping with the tense riding style although I am at my most relaxed whilst riding my bike.
I rode a fair bit over Xmas with my Bell super lid on "NOT" full face, and hadn't realised that I was struggling with the peak until I got half a mile from home, the stiffness in my neck has been a real pain since, I've not worn it for the past few weeks, I had left my normal helmet at work so had to wear the Bell,
Im almost certain on buying the cowbells I just need some clarification on hood positioning and lever angle, I've been looking at pictures and some of the levers look angled out, where as I,d like the traditional pointing forwards straight up and down approach, so maybe these aren't the right bars? How does the positioning seem to you?
The levers will definitely be flared outwards, the same amount as the drops are.
What this does when descending/riding on the drops is place your hands and wrists in a flatter plane compared to normal unflared bars. It does give you more control and feels less tiring compared to normal unflared bars. They are nowhere near as flared as the Mary's, Woodchippers and similar alt. bars.
The Zipps I linked to above feel like a good balance between the two. I'll get some pictures up later for you to see comparison.
Giro XAR has a moveable peak if you are wanting a peak.
