Did we come to an agreement on this? Is the Salsa rack worth £80? Is a normal rack and adapters just a bodge?
in my eyes, no rack is worth £80
and this is from a man who in the past has owned 2 x tubus titanium racks.
for the last 5 years I have used a topeak super dx. 24.99
Well given its designed for the Altenator dropouts its pretty much the only one you can easily fit to those bikes without faff, bodge or guessing what else might fit.
No way would I pay £80 quid for a rack, I just bought an Axiom disc specific rack for my Genesis Croix de fer for £30.
As much as I do like Salsa and Surly stuff, they are just ripping us all off.
I don't think it's worth £80 either, but the point is that Salsa claim it is the only one that fits. Question is, has anyone bodged a normal one, or does anyone make adapters? I am drawing a blank on Google.
I don't have any pics but I ran a tortec rack on my el mariachi with tubus axle mounts.
The standard QR ones? Did it fit ok?
I'd reckon you only need the mounting kit; if having the rack a good 5cm higher than it should be annoys you, something like this Tubus adapter mounted upside-down should work; that or a rack designed for a smaller wheel size.
A QR-mounted rack works as long as you space it out enough to clear the Alternator pivot and you don't intend to adjust the dropout position in the future.

Plenty of options if you want to just mount one on the QR axle, but ive not seen anything where someone has bodged onto the altenator bolt. It should be entirely possible, perhaps use a 26" wheel rack to start as you will be raising it up and a 29er one might endup too high, fit the tubus QR adaptors (or a piece of plate to achieve the same), then some M6 Bolt spacers from somewhere (official parts maybe easiest to source) and bobs your rack.
Or just buy one, fit it, ride.
I have a Madison Summit rack on the old Kona hack bike, it comes with some long leg brackets to adjust for different wheel sizes. I'm pretty sure it could be easily adapted to fit on a Salsa.
I also have an El Mariachi that I can look at for a while and stroke my chin at if needed, maybe even measure some stuff if you want?
A 26" rack and the alternator kit might do it... There is also a rack at Go Outdoors that comes with a flat plate mount with a variety of holes drilled in it. £40, but that's a bit of an outlay for a pure experiment.
Neil, stroke away and take some pics... ta.
Yeah its just the tubus qr kit I used and a clamp on the seatpost.
It mounts the rack behind the dropouts. I'll have a look round for the bits and take a pic tonight.
The tortec rack I bought came with similar plates that would do the job

😯
You can also get racks that mount to the seat stays, like the Thule one
Would prefer to mount on the alternator botlts if possible, to avoid faffage when removing wheels etc but open to ideas.
I've sent you an email with pics. 8)
ta!
I've had a look at mine with the adaptors.
You would need longer bolts and spacers to mount the tubes adaptors to the alternator bolts, as they don't fit into the recess. This would probably be pointless as if you got longer bolts and some washers you could mount the rack straight to them.
They do work fine on the axle, but it is a faff removing wheels.
tubes adaptors
?? Is that a typo?
This may be a moot point now anyway. I wanted to fit a rack to the Salsa to accomodate panniers, so I could use it to get to my hotel with my work stuff then go riding on it during the week. However, I just bought myself a rucksack which is the perfect size to do that.
However, the rucksack cost £80. And I still want the rack. D'oh!
I bought one,
Great quality
Suprisingly light
Panniers + a usable top deck
Perfect fit, not a bodge
Expensive but even a Tubus Fly is £50 and still needs to be fitted.
About £20 overpriced i.e. close enough to shift enough units
