Noticed that my poor brake pad replacement a couple of years ago broke parts of the ceramic pistons in the calliper. Brake has been pumping up for a while suggesting air is getting in and am I right in thinking the only way to replace the pistons is to replace the whole calliper unit??

Correct. I have however had two SLX brakes replaced under warranty due to similar problems.
