You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
So, having just bought my first 'proper' MTB (Specialized Chisel Comp 2018) I have been trying to get my head round setting up my fork (RockShox Judy Gold). From what I've read, it looks like setting sag correctly is important to preserve the bike's geometry, and indeed here Specialized says "Our engineers design each bike to be set up at a specific sag value (we call it Rx Tune)". However, nowhere can I find the figure I should be aiming at for my bike - only generalisations like "For XC, 20 percent is a good place to start". Feeling a bit puzzled by all this, and curious to know what other people think / can advise...
Set your sag to around 25%, go for a ride...if It feels too soft or too stiff, alter the air pressure accordingly.
Also, you'll probably never get repeatable sag measurements so I wouldn't worry too much.
Try and hire a shock wiz, it will tell you everything you need to know.
If you are near West Yorkshire send me a message and I'll sort one out for you.
There's probably an optimum sag position for pedaling. But I wouldn't worry too much about it if it rides ok.
For the record, I remember trying a single pivot bike probably with s bit more sag than ideal back in the day. The Bob was phenomenal, ridden SP bikes recently and never had anything close. So unless you're getting huge Bob, don't worry too much about it.
Thanks for the tips guys ... shockwiz really appeals to my nerdy side, will definitely look into that one.
