You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
I managed to kill my 456 today. All it took was a sodding great stick in the spokes to lock the wheel as I stood up and tried to grunt up a steep section.
The dead rear mech isn't an issue - it was three years old anyway - but I've completely ruined the dropout on the drive side. It's not just bent (though it is, a lot), it's really stretched....you could run a 30mm axle, should such a thing exist. There's a bit of a twist to the rear of the frame as well, so I suspect the whole thing needs re-jigging.
I'm sure I could send it off to a bearded artisan (TM) to be fixed, but when a new 456 frame costs only £150, it seems a bit pointless.
RIP 456 (in That Blue). Despite the exotica in my garage, this was the bike I always went for, pretty much to the exclusion of everything else. I can't believe I'm so upset about a daft bike that I got on a Cycle To Work scheme 6 years ago, but you get attached to things.....
Anyway, what next? Given how much I loved the 456, shall I just get another one, or is there something out there (steel, I think) which has moved the game on in the last 6 years.
How about a 456?
