Anyone been? I'm needing my Austrian alpine fix soon and wondering if the trail-riding there has a decent quantity of singletrack, or more of the fireroad variety... was last there 12 years back learning to Board so only have vague memories of the hills there. I like slow techy stuff as opposed to bombing runs. Ta.

Hi,

I went there twice last year, there are several possibilities for singletrails, some man-made, other just normal alpine walkers trails.

If you stay in a hotel of the region you get the Joker card that gives you unlimited gondola rides (bike included) in SaalBach/Hinterglemm area and 1 lift ride per day in Leogang in the other side of the valley. From each gondola you have at least 1 singletrail/free-ride run to the valley, mostly steep, some northshore style sections, some drops (chicken line is always available), but highly enjoyable if it's dry.

Highly recommended day ride (although really tiring) is the "Big 5" ride, 5 gondola rides in 1 day, around 55-65km, 5000hm of descent with only 1000hm uphill (okay, 50% is fireroad but you can get some decent speed) but it also includes 1 way up the Leogang lift, so you can do the Leogang WC DH (or the freeride) trail from the middle station).

Bike-wise for these trails, unless you have an strong AM/Freeride bike, consider to rent one in there. There's always a intersport shop at each lift station. The trails are steep and quite demanding for the gear (even without crashing).

If you're looking for a place to stay and don't mind being out of town on the hills, try the spielberghaus, it's run by MTB people and they even made a freeride section straight out of the house and down to the valley.

A word of advice on the singletrails, except for the bike-park man-made trails, almost all of the others are in reality walking trails that can be used by bikes as well, so when meeting walkers please slow-down/stop and be polite.

Best regards,
Carlos.
