Just building up a FlareMAX.... but finishing it on hold as the weather is rubbish and I need some gear cable ( the only thing I really don't have!).
Question: Â I posted a week ago about running a Sun-Race 11-50 ... and the STW posse tell me I have to go with a medium cage XT mech for this to work ...
The clearance on the FM chain stay with a 32 ring and on the 11 cog at the back is "just - and not much more". Â So I was thinking go going to a 34 chain ring ...
Will this work on the Sun Race /Medium Cage set up?

Yes, assuming that you have the correct chain length. F chainring size is pretty irrelevant as it is the exactly same amount of chain slack during gear changes that is taken up by the derailleur as before.
Just fitted this same combination(34, 11-50) on the other half's Marin. Works perfect with the xt med cage mech. Needed a new chain to get the length and went for sram 1170. Shifts way smoother than the previous all Shimano set up and has cured the back pedalling problem into the bargain.
