So my FOX X2 is off for a service, I decided to buy a spare shock to keep me riding and as a back up

Shock I bought was advertised on ebay as a 210x55 FOX DPS which is the same size as my FOX X2

Ebay shock arrives and I put the serial number into FOX'S website and it comes up as a 210x50!

Now I can return the shock for a refund as its not as advertised but I got it really cheap and its only a back up till the X2 is ready and then will sit in a drawer till its needed again

Now I presume its OK to run and I'll just have less travel (around 17mm if im correct)

Quick fit and there is no fouling etc...

Obviously ill be taking it a bit easier on the bike with reduced travel

Aother option is to just sell it on and i should make my money back, maybe even a bit of profit

Are you sure it's a 50 and not a 55? I only ask as I know some versions of X2 could have the travel internally adjusted. Not idea if yours is one of them, or if it could be done, or whether it has.

But might be worth actually measuring it.

The only difference is spacers, it might have started life as 210x50 but had spacers removed to make it 210x55

(or you could remove them if not)

Pretty simple to remove the 5mm travel spacer; if you're worried you can ask a shop to do it for you.

All eye-eye shocks are the same, they just step them down internally.

Might want to re read my post

Ethier you are miss reading or I'm not explaining properly!

My 210x55 fox x2 is off for a service

I bought a fox dps 210x55 off ebay as a stop gap and future spare

210x55 ebay fox dps arrives, I put the serial number into fox's website and it comes back as a 210x50!

Which means it came from the factory configured as 50mm stroke. The seller may have removed the 5mm internal spacer, thus changing it to 55mm stroke.

Escrs,

Might want to re-read all of our posts.

The new shock is either

a) a 210x50 misadvertised

Solution: remove 5mm travel spacer and get 210 55

b) a 210x50 that has the 5mm travel spacer removed already

Solution: Empty the air and measure the stroke length extended and compressed, discover you were stressing about nothing and continue with life.

Seller hasn't touched the shock, they have admitted its a listing error so its definitely a 210x50 as per fox's website

That's irrelevant.

210x50 with a 5mm spacer in is the same as a 210x55 without a spacer. Remove the spacer from the 210x50 to make it a 210x55

Either way, it'll be fine.

How much travel you'll lose depends on the kinematic of the bike.

I'd probably just open it up and remove the spacer, it's easy to do on a DPS.

It seems like its not worth the hassle of removing the spacer as if i end up damaging something im screwed plus i presume id have to put some oil in which i dont have, unless i am wrong?

I may as well just return it and get a refund as its not as advertised and then buy one which is the correct advertised size

Its really simple to open the shock up, and judging by the video posted above it's even easier to add/remove the spacer. If it was that cheap, pay a shop to swap it over if you're worried about damaging it.

Surely you'd have to open it up to check/fit the correct number of tokens, removing the spacer isn't much harder than that.

Never had to open up a shock before now, always had them set up by TFTuned

Regardless of it being the right size or not, I'd still want to be cracking open a used shock of unknown history and doing an air can service anyway.
Of note, the DPS doesn't have the same spacer set up as the float x video above. It's a metal spacer ring that you have to snip off with side cutters iirc.
I can understand not wanting to do that.
If it were really cheap though and just a backup, run it as is and enter the downcountry genre

Here you go:

https://www.mtbr.com/threads/2019-fox-float-dps-travel-reducer.1114541/

I removed the travel reducer on my DPS to lengthen the stroke. Literally cut away that plastic bit about the metal disc. That's the stroke reducer.

Lol - too slow...

Yup - I used some side cutters. Very, very easy. 2 min job.

So ive managed to remove the alloy 5mm spacer without scratching the shaft!

Had to use a combo of a junior hacksaw and some side cutters

Obviously there is some swarf now so ill have to clean everything down and buy some fox oil for the air can

Should of just returned it but at least now i have an idea on how to do a air can service!
