You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
I know I might be getting repetitive now with another "can't believe he's done that" story but here's the latest!
So last weekendish identified that miniLD's BB was getting a bit rough/grumbly. Tightened the DUB ring a wee bit and felt not too bad. Ordered new one and said aye you can keep riding, you'll only wear the bearing more and it's getting replaced anyway.
Took cranks off today to replace BB and this is all that was left of driveside bearing -
And this is what has happened to the axle -
So new crankset required. Doh. And new tool for DUB and not many GX cranks available......
Moral of the story is don't run DUB BB to destruction. To be fair he did do a 300k+ and 20000ft climbing week which I wasn't to know in advance!

FIFY 😉
Worse than gxp generally?
I think you can probably run them to the precise point of failure, but not a mile more. Best of luck getting that right.
I was about to post that the bearings can seize and you wear the crank away. But you already discovered that 🙂
I'd like to think the creaking and crunching would irritate me enough to change it sooner.
To be fair that would happen with any BB with an alloy axle and bearings that sit directly on to it?
Although having re-read that statement, it may well only apply to SRAM. Shimano only had aluminium axles for the first iteration of XTR and XT and had plastic sleeves. My RF Deus cranks had steel axles and plastic spacers. My GXP cranks had no spacers, but steel axles.
Not just Sram or aluminium axles, had a customer who was really proud of getting his money's worth out of his £30 Shimano BB, until I showed him his £270 Ultegra crank that he'd worn through.

Yes me too but we're not 15! Every time I ride his bike I notice another problem.
No direct replacements in UK until July, I guess it's over to Shimano.
Dub be (not) good to op!
Had to do some emergency surgery to my Middleburn crank and Hope BB before a Sunday ride recently, after noticing it wasn't spinning as freely as normal, yep both bearings were seized. Thankfully caught it early enough not to foobar the crank and the bearings freed up after some oil and a re grease.. This winters been tough on bikes too it would appear.
I've been running mine to destruction for the last ten years. UN74 on the Stinky. No sign of destruction as yet though
That's kinda the point of the post, I didn't realise things could get quite so bad. It didn't seize, the bearing disintegrated and he kept riding with just a couple of alloy rings for friction reduction! No balls whatsoever.
I saw the decathlon cranks but a bit scant on detail as to the specs and dare I say suspiciously cheap. He rides hard so don't want to send him out on inferior kit. Have found a gx but 175 which wouldn't be great on a lls bike.
I have seen a Shimano Hollowtech axle fail in a spiral fracture that made the axle about 18" long when removed from the bike. It had been persistently squeaking, and had drawn comment from me on every ride, but my pal had not addressed it as "It isn't that bad". Catastrophic failure ended the ride.
That's impressive 😂
I killed a frame for the sake of an octalink BB. There was a bit of play but I thought I'd hang on and just replace it in spring when I did a full service.
Pulled the BB out by hand. The play was the BB moving in the frame, not the bearings 🙁
I've never worn a crankset to destruction but a few of mine are marked where the bearings make contact so it is one to keep an eye on. Its knowing the difference between a bit rough and booked...
