No, not a dodgy club or film but boring tyres!
Looking to replace 2.2 Conti Gravity rear with something else.
Was recommended RQ, but was going to go 2.4, as my 2.2 comes up quite skinny.
Read in a few places the RQ 2.4s are 'mahoosive' amongst other words ie BIG! Is this the case and is it that much of an issue - going on a Commencal Meta with loads of clearance.
Also, is it worth going for the Black Chilli versions over a standard £15 wire jobbie?
Your responses, as ever, will be gratefully received 😉
loving the black chilli
I have had the 2.4 and the 2.2. The 2.4 does come out big, but it gives you so much confidence because it is just huge. Personally, i would run a 2.4 BC on the front and a 2.2 BC.
And, yes, the BC compound is amazing!
My cynicism about BC compound has been firmly quashed. Spendy tho.
Very spendy!
Decided on 2.2 as I don't want a tractor wheel on the bike, then looked at cost.
I'm not usually a tightarse but £40+ on one tyre is mental when the wire non-BC can be bought for £13 in some places. Will it really be that much worse than the BC?
Might have to go back to High Rollers after all!
Loving my Black Chilli Rubber Queen 2.2. Expensive but very hard wearing so worth it IMHO.
Size - being a bit of a sad git I've gauged mine - 55.0 mm across the carcass (the widest part on this tyre) on a 24 mm rim and 56.3 mm on a new Flow Ex rim. Also, they're 5 mm 'taller' than a Mountain King Mk II 2.2 Protection if that helps. So spot on 2.2" wide on a narrower rim but very slightly wider on the Flow Ex, and 5 mm taller than a 'normal' tyre.
Fits in my Reba fork but not on the back of my current hardtail - but will fit on the back of my new Soul when the frame arrives....... 😀
2.4" Rubber Queens are bigger than 2.5" Maxxis, probably closer to a 2.7" Minion or High Roller in size. Seriously!
2.2" Rubber Queens are bloody big for their size, quite a bit bigger than a 2.35" Maxxis High Roller or Minion, probably close to a 2.5" Maxxis in size.
Black Chili really is as good as everyone says it is. I know that spending that much on a bike tyre really invokes the need for a reality check and a loud exlamaition of "ow mooch?". BUT... Buy a pair, save the extra £40 you've spent on them over another set of tyres elsewhere on the bike (SLX bits instead of XT next time etc.) cos they really are that good!
You can get them for around £31 from German sites usually.
I wish there was a 2.3 for the back of hardtails, the 2.4 is huge and won't fit most, but the 2.2 isn't as voluminous as I've come to like.
The mk2 mountainkings are nice as another option. Not got the black chilli thing myself, can't tell the difference. But then I put them on last spring so it has just been mud mud and more mud so far.
I run a 2.2 on my Yeti 575. Can't get a 2.4 in the rear so be careful. They are massive!
