You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Off to the Lakes in a couple of weeks (Hopefully!), staying in Glenridding and will be taking the bike seat (Kids Ride Shotgun) for my daughter so she can come on some rides. I'll probably take her for a lap of the Whinlatter blue and maybe head to Grizedale for a potter on some of the easier trails but was looking for some more route inspiration, advice and suggestions if anyone has any?
Ideally fairly low level routes to avoid exposure if the weather's poor, climbing's fine as long as it's not hike-a-bike / too techy as I'd struggle with bike and daughter. Plus if the route has some toddler based points of interest to keep her motivated that would be a bonus (She loves the caves under Loughrigg), apparently the possibility of finding a bear in a cave is just as exciting / motivating as a nice Singletrack descent!
She can generally last about an hour or so before she starts to get distracted, hungry, letting go of the handlebars etc so I can't go too far.
Any suggestions more than welcome. Thanks.
Cathedral Cavern near Little Langdale might fit the bill. Park at Tilberthwaite, up and over on a good track, explore the cave on foot with headtorches if you feel like it, or peer in then run away, then back the way you came or via Hodge Close (another big hole) if you can go a bit further.
Other than that, there's the cycle track on the far side of Windermere which goes around Claife Heights over to Wray Castle. You can park in Bowness and take the ferry over for bonus points.
Elterwater to Skelwith Bridge involves another easy track, pretty flat, and lunch from Chesters by the River.
Elterwater/skelwith can also be extended in to langdale along the valley bottom
Ennerdale forest up to blacksail hut, all forest road but nice and remote feeling, can also cross the river and pootle about
****in miles away but eskdale has loads of valley bottom bways and mini chuff chuff trains too
I’d second the bowness to hawkshead ferry idea- park easily right by the ferry, cross over and lake shore up the west coast of Windermere to Wray castle (good adventure play area).
Yeah along windermere north from the ferry would be great.... tilberthwaite in general and the path along the A road from there to Coniston is good too. I used to do some pretty serious downhills with mine on the back including madly Walna Scar on a hardtail when he was around 18 months! Must have been crazy!
Thanks for your suggestions, plenty there for me to look into. MiniWhippy will love the ferry idea 🙂
You can make a nice loop using the train at Eskdale: take the train out and then there's a bridleway back. There's one climb on the way back, although I made it (pushing) with a weeride and a trailer once! As noted, it's miles away, and you need to book the train for bikes.
Maybe one for the future, but there's a nice out-and-back to Force Crag Mine from Braithwaite. Not much of interest, but it's downhill all the way back so a good one to do once they've got their own wheels.
