Greetings oh hive mind.

Next week we've got an Air B&B booked near Blaenau Ffestiniog and I will be taking Hatter Jr to Wales for his first 'proper MTB' experience.

He's keen as mustard but with small wheels and legs he's not going to be getting up any big mountains or steep climbs.

We already have Llandegla blue and the Minor Taur at Coedy scheduled in, but are there any other routes within a sensible drive that you can recommend?

Any flatter shorter 'family' routes nearby that we can take his little sister on will be very welcome as well.

Thanks in advance.

Trawsfynydd lake. Look for the power station. Park up by the cafe near the main road. Nice cycle paths there by the lake.

Not sure a 8.4 km climb with a average grade of 8.9% will appeal to the nipper but if I sneak out on my own.....

I'd suggest the cwyfwylym coch or however it's spelled at CYB. Take a trail map with you and you can easily bail onto the Afon or Minortaur if his skills aren't quite up there with his keenness.

However I'd take a tow rope for that final drag up to the visitors centre as it's a bit of a slog ( also applies to Minortaur, though he's probably have more left in the tank after that than Coch)

At Llandegla, depending oh how his fitness versus tech skills attitude is, you may want to consider a tow up the first endless hill and then add on bits of the red. The first two hairpin after the blue splits off are especially good as a next step up. And it's pretty easy to get back onto the blue again

How about Llyn Brenig there are routes of different lengths. It's a bit hilly if you cycle round the whole thing but not as hilly a llandegla blue may a bit hard for little sister.

its a distance away, but Newborough forest in SW Anglesey is lovely. Its sheltered from the worst wind and rain. Its mostly landrover track that is stone and dries v fast. Its prob a trail centre blue-, but there are hills and single track through the trees. My kids loved it when they were about 7. There are loos and a coffee/burger van. If you have non riders, the beach walk onto Llandwyn island is fabulous.
