There loads of good routes from there...the Roman Road, Stake Moss, and the BWs to the North (i forget the names)are all great fun...you cant go too wrong down there. The climbs are big and steep though, so have your climbing legs on.

mostly BW's and farm tracks (double track). there are a couple of websites with routes, ride the dales or mtb the dales (or something along those lines).

Pop over to Swaledale (9 miles away) and do the Swaledale Round.

NW along A684 to Cotter Riggs. Take BW just by road junction, parallel to road at first and then up to Cotter End (full marks if you make it to the gate). Carry on up past lime kiln to top on obvious zig-zag track. Follow BW all the way to B road just before Outhgill.

Return by road.

A great intro to Dales moorland cruising and Dales climbing 🙂

You can also start the above by taking the Pennine Way (it is a BW) NW from Hardraw. Another nice climb. Then near the top take the obvious marked BW left contouring and down into Cotterdale (not the FP about half the way up). Try not to miss sneaky BW sign off to R into forest near bottom of descent into Cotterdale.

Road back to Hawes or join the other route at Cotter Riggs.

Enjoy! 🙂

Whats that descent into Hawes, a black run starts as double track ends as a steep quarry. Almost squashed a dog on it. Totally fantastic if a little scary.

clark, lady Anne Clifford highway?. a good route I recall, 15 years since I've done it, I was hoping the return road section might have been cut out by now.

Hi B.A.Nana...

...as a confirmed off-roader I found the roads good fun (!!), quiet and big gears. You could always reverse the 'Highway' 😉

Cheers

Mainly tracks but typical Dalesy: Pennine Way south (Dodd Fell) to Kidhow Gate. Stay with PW to Cam End and down to Gearstones (just north of Ribblehead). Right on road 1 mile to Black Rake BW. Follow to Dent road, turn right then left at Newby Head Gate & onto new BW over Wold Fell. Drop to top of Arten Gill and turn right. Descent BW (lots of rocks & ruts) into Widdale. Keep with BW to road, turn left & follow into Hawes.

PW Dodd Fell (Ingleborough in distance)

Rocks or ruts into Widdale - take your pick!

He prefered the hidden ruts 🙂

Look at the Cam High and West Cam road, and the route from Dentdale over the back of Whernside to Ribblehead. They make for a good fig-8/lollipop type route so leaves some good long/short option possibilities.

No, not a trail centre 😉 You will need to be able to read a map. Mostly bridle way but erosion has knackered quite a few so you get a bit of everything. Can be and is very exposed in some places. The last time I was down that way we got caught in a storm and the tracks quickly turned to rivers and the grit mixed with the water trashed our brake pads. It was so windy we rarely had to use them anyway ❗

I'm going to let you into the secret of the swimming place in Raydale, known only to locals and lucky walkers: drive up past Semerwater and park at Marsett then walk about 1 km west up Marsett beck, don't take bikes it isn't worth it. About 400m up, look out for the passage under the rocks on the left that you can crawl through - kids love it. After 1 km just before the field wall curves away from the beck to the north is a little waterfall and rock pool. In summer the water is solar heated as it runs over the flat rocks; you can skinny-dip and sunbathe on the slabs, take a picnic, it's a lovely spot for a family.

Globalti, In 30+ years of going there, I've never been to that spot, although have heard about it from locals (Peter and Listy who owned the farm house and small caravan park on road to marsett).
Alternatively, to a select few, waterskiing on Semerwater. we're there most Sundays, weather permitting.

My parents used to live in the right hand one of the three cottages at Countersett, which overlook Semerwater. So you're the noisy so-and-sos who race around the lake on summer days? 😆

cheers to all, had a great time, much a grueling accent and thrilling descent - rode many of the routes suggested here and also name check the dales bike centre who were a great help in providing route maps and advice. Many a highlight and a few photos of my own here:
