My brother lives in Derby and I thought it would be quite nice to go and visit him on my bike, 45 miles or so, train back if I'm feeling lazy, job done.

What is scuppering it is trying to plan a route that any route I plan seems to be overly convoluted or involve riding on the A38. The former I can deal with to a small degree but the latter seems like a terrible idea. Before I give it up as a bad idea, does anyone have any clever routes that may work?

Google's suggestion doesn't look too bad. Only on the A38 for maybe a mile.

I have the link you need, http://www.cyclestreets.net/
plan out your route and click 'quietest' and it will display a route using sustrans routes, canals and the like and you can download a gpx of it if you like.
