You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Hi
Planning a ride from Patterdale in a few weeks time. In the morning - Helvellyn - that routes all sorted - Sticks/Seldom, as have rode Dollywagon previously.
In the afternoon looking to ride the Ullswater singletrack. Looks like there are a lot of options here ie north to south OR south to north. And then, what is the best route from Boredale Hause.
We are all pretty good riders, so looking for a suggestion that is technical, gnar etc (ie not a long grassy DH etc) but something to keep us on our toes.
Happy to be pointed to 'navigational errors' too from Boredale Hause as it looks like there are a couple up there...

The lake shore path is equally good in either direction. But since the stone pitching of the Boredale Hause descent to Patterdale, I'd suggest heading up Northward to the hause via the Bridgend bridleway (almost entirely rideable!) then traversing amazing singletrack onto Beda Fell. Either descend towards Dalehead via the bridleway (but this is fast and grassy), or stick to the Beda Fell ridge over Beda Head for techier gnar, bearing R at the end down to the Winter Crag Bridleway. Then return from Sandwick via the Lakeshore.
Don't want to be a killjoy but this has been posted on lakesmtb instagram feed (amongst others.) Not saying you shouldn't, but just be aware!
This only a small loop but it fits in enough.
From Patterdale Whyte Lion head south and take the first left and follow that along and bare left again and climb up to a gate at the end of the road. Climb the zig zag and bare left (North) to take an undulating rocky path to Silver Bay. This is more run than the main BW along shore.
Follow shore BW from Silver Bay to Sandwick and then take road round to Boredale valley. Climb up Boredale Head and continue along path and bare right to miss the path junction at Boredale Hause to take the upper Boredale descent down to where you started in Patterdale.
If you want more, start from Hartsop car park and climb up to Haweswater and then grassy hike a bike towawards the Knott but turn uoff at wall before top to head across Prison Crag, Satura Crag and Angle Tarn to Boredale Hause. And bolt on to route above.
PS it's not very flowing, but a good challenge.
Thanks folks - hmmm, Ullswater clockwise or anti-clockwise then! Both sound great. Would a there and back be better than the loop?
And thanks Richard for the note of caution. I will speak with the other riders and make a decision on the day. I had heard about this farmer previously, but also heard you can cut off near the bottom to avoid his farm.
Don't go through the farm!
I like the shore both ways. It takes as long to ride the shore from Sandwick to Patterdale as it does to go round on the road and off road over Boredale Head, even though one is flattish and the other a stiff climb.
If it is wet the shore can get quite slippery 😁
