I'm aware of the round isle of wight cycle route that is mainly road based, but is there anything out there that is mainly off-road based?

Not really.

there are bridleways to link up but it’s a convoluted affair.

Have you looked on Strava ?

I once took the SS over there to do exactly this, I chopped it in half becuse it took so long to get from Cowes to the Needles and back over to Newport..

Its doable, but the routes are mainly confined to the middle of the islandz

I rode around the western half of the island in June

The south west quarter - from Freshwater Bay to Niton - was mostly off-road on chalk downs. Nothing too technical but lots of ups and downs. The north west quarter - Cowes to Yarmouth - was almost entirely on-road.

Depends on what sort of trip you want, but if it was multi-day you could ride across the new forest to the lymington-yarmouth ferry, go across the island on the chalk downs and get the ferry back from Ryde

I have the BHF off road route if you want a GPX? It was about 7 years ago, but should be on my Strava somewhere! Message me if you want it

There is an offroad route called the Chalk Ridge Extreme that covers most of the offroad highlights.

https://www.bikemap.net/en/r/3410333/

It doesn't go "round the island" in quite the way that the on-road randonee route does, but it picks out most of the non-cheeky highlights. It's also waymarked, but a little haphazardly.

I keep meaning to ride it but never get round to it.

Thanks all, found out more about the chalk ridge extreme which sounds good. also a thread from 8 months ago with more info -  https://singletrackmag.com/forum/topic/isle-of-wight-off-road-loop/

Superfli - thanks! found your strava route in the old thread, it hadn't shown up in previous searches.

Only other question I've got is - Do I go clockwise or anti-clockwise? Are there sections best ridden one way or another? Two of us on CX bikes. First day on the traditional round island road loop, second day - off road loop.
