Not sure, perhaps $100 but some companies ask mad prices.

The shipping isn't the problem, it's VAT and Customs that'll screw you over (and they charge VAT on the postage).

Yep it cost me $100 dollars last couple of times.

If you get a decent courier like DHL and not Royal Fail then you don't get messed around with holding charges while they wait for you to pay the customs duty etc - DHL just turn up on your doorstep with parcel and you swipe your card to pay the customs duty on the spot.

At the moment $300 usd plus vat etc. That's FedEx.

Do they really charge vat on the delivery charge?

Beyond shipping its worth a thought on the warranty side too.

If you get a duff paint job or an iffy brake mount then the retailer will expect you to send it to them for inspection / replacement. Coughing up £200 to post it back is a bit of a gamble.

In great Britain we have some awesome frame companies like singular, dialled etc... And some great shops importing great frames. Let them deal with customs etc, your job is to ride and smile.

Right now my shipment of Canfield Brother 29ers is with custom/FedEx while they attempt to identify an elbow and an arse. Been there for ten days now while they fail. Grrrrr

It's quite pricey. Onion is getting a 907 from that side of the world and it is costing a fair chunk to come over.

We have been shipping to Oz and that is daft money. Last Soul that went was £140...

Italy - a saddle, via DHL was quoted at £27-32 - Royal Mail only took £3 for doing it though.

But anyway, i reckon you would be looking at between £100-150. It is the volumetric weight issue rather than item value IYKWIM, they multiply the weight (low for a frame) by the size of box so your average volumetric weight for a wee frame would end up at 20 odd kg.

How can CRC send my frame for free then? They've gotta be losing cash on that one, surely? Not that I'm complaining...

they're the Northern Irish Post Offices largest customers - they probably send a container sized amount of stuff your way every week - that buys a lot of discount...

I'm paying $209 for two shipments. One is frame and stuff, one is wheels, tyres (fatty wheels & tyres, so quite heavy). They're coming USPS. So - $100 or so would cover it. Then there's customs duty, VAT etc...

psychle - they output millions of pounds to other lands. Postage will be very cheap - i expect couriers will be bending over for that work.

Us on the other hand do not get that attention from shippers.

edit: bearing in mind as well that these costs are unlikely to come down at all ever it is only going to go up. Fuel ain't any cheaper and the surcharges seem to be 'interesting'.

VAT and Customs charges was on cost of item plus shipping, which seems a little harsh.

....and don't forget you've paid for shipping so UPS have their money for delivery yet.....they levy a administration charge ontop as well..

Years ago I had this. I paid on the doorstep then for months afterwards I received threatening letters for a debt from UPS. Collections weren't interested in the fact I'd paid/had bank a/c receipt. So in the end I just ignore the letters. 😯

Whenever I've been in the US I've always found the shipping costs to be very random. Sometimes it could cost as little as $50 to ship a frame within US, but other times >$100.

Shipping abroad tended to be at least $100-$150.

Think it cost about $250 to $300 to ship the tandem over from Texas. It did come in two flight cases that each comply with the 62 inch luggage rule (length + width + height = 62 inches)however. I know that's used for passenger luggage but it might also be used for freight.

I was sweating on VAT and duty on it but managed to miss that as it was the best part of $8000 worth of kit and shipping costs!

The trick it would appear is when asked by the customs people who/what is it for is to give them an answer which doesn't fit into one of the tick boxes on their forms!
