Given the number of thefts from car roof bike carriers is there a weakness in the lock design ?
Or are they just not strong enough?
What extra security measures do you take?

I store my bike in a Garage, leave it on the roof of your motor and it probably is more likely to get thieveded... 😉

I'd suggest like sheds, garages and all that the only security is what your insurance company specifies. Let them take care of the rest.

The main weakness is the lock is pretty basic and locking into a plastic housing. I have never concidered the lock on my roof carries as a theft preventing lock more as a lock to insure the closeure does not pop open when the bikes move about on the top of the car.

I have seen people lock bikes to the roof bars with chains etc but my personal preferance is to lock them to the towing eye (on my car this is is fixed to the chassis).

Don't leave them out of sight, simples. They are no where near strong enough to to be left. Fitting a lock maybe an answer but is it really worth the risk? It pisses me off when I go somewhere and the car park isn't in sight of the cafe but its not as pissed off as I'd be if I can back to my bike missing.

Depends where you are. At a trail centre like whinlatter, which seems to be a wonderful place to steal bikes i would have it with me and locked to the fence whilst i sat next to it.

When i go to Boot in Eskdale it's pretty remote so the bike is locked with multiple locks onto the roof carrier, then when the tent is up and the kit out of the car the bikes go inside the car.
