To tighten the roof bar fixings.
Driving south down the M1 just before J23 (nr. Leicester) today and saw an expensive looking road bike attached to rack in the middle lane.
Was ages before i saw the proud owners car (Audi) down parked up on the hard shoulder.
Made me think what to do if this happened, don't think i'd fancy trying to dodge the lorries trying to retrieve it.

Roof mounted bike racks .. .... Remember!! watch out for height limits!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Twice now had two roof racks at work with 2 bikes on each absolutely destroyed. One vehicle had the two front wheels and forks written off both bikes, £2000 of damage. The other bent the frame, and the same as above, so a little more damage. Hearing that sickening crunch would just be the worst feeling so make damn sure you remember!!!!!
but having it fall off...... that sucks big time. So dangerous to other road users too
