I'm in need of a new BB and I've found one that's a pretty decent price and has roller bearings which I like the sound of as I reckon they should work well. Is this a good idea or is there some reason to avoid roller bearings?

What's the BB?

IIRC the first xtr HT2 ones were no better than normal. Sealing may be more important.

It's the superstar one, it looks pretty good in my opinion:

It certainly makes sense. I'd say give it a go but be sure to report back.

I would point out that reading the claims on his website and the terms of his guarantee would hardly fill me with confidence. However I won't as I will get shouted down.

TJ's right about the warranty - 5 years as the only thing that will kill them is neglect. That leaves a lot to whether they think you've been neglectful if they don't last 5 years.

But I'd still buy them, prise open the seals and ram them full of good waterproof grease.

KCNC seem to do them as well. good point on that site about only working with pinch bolt style cranks.

Think I might go for the KCNC one then, forgive me for being dim but what does it mean by pinch bolt style?

Like on Shimano HT2 cranks, you use 2 pinch bolts to attach the left crank arm to the axle. As opposed to Truvative GXP, where you use some funky self extracting bolt thingy

I have bearings like that in a headset, not really that good IME.

The pinch bolt bit means like shimano ones do up as opposed to raceface. Its to do with sideways preload on the bearings (which would be less on pinch bolt ones: think of it as an aheadset on its side with the plastic cap being the top cap bolt and the pinch bolts as stem bolts).

Ah OK, that's what I thought :). Hmm I might not bother with roller bearings actually...might just stick with the tried and tested methods!

I think it's safe to say that "roller bearings alone do not durable botom bracket make".

It's different in a hs as the rollers ought to be tapered but not all manufacturers do so, which results in accelerated wear.

Or for the same price.............

Buy some SKF/FAG/NKG bearings for about £25 a pair from your friendly local engineering firm (dont buy cheep shit), tap the old ones out of your BB (not shimano, they're a funny size), insert the new bearings, and enjoy many months of happiness.

I've been running one of the kcnc bb's for just over a year on my commuter, so on the road, but used every time I'm in work in all weathers. Not had to think about it, so I'm happy enough.
