I want butterfly bars on my long distance tourer but have been told by my LBS that the Rohloff shifter wont fit. Cant see why not but the mechanic is adamant. What gives? Anyone done this?
The shifter has to be slid onto the end of a bar and could well be too long to slide around the bends to get to where you need it?
That said, if you look at Mark Beaumont's bike, hover over the bars and it could fit there. Well, it obviously does, depends on the bars?
there is no way the twist grip will go round a bend on the bars. End of.
you'll struggle TBH. I tried the same thing on my Airnimal - the shifter just won't slide round the bends in drops / TT bars (at least all those I tried). There are a couple of alternatives: you can get a bar end 'convertor' plug thing that sticks in the end of the bars and allows you to mount one that way, there is a german company that sells (£££) an odd set of drops with an integrated shifter, you can use one of the stem mounted extensions to run a flat bar above / below the drops or like me, you can buy a set of drop barends from SJS cycles...
Can't see it happening in any way on butterfly bars. That said might be worth giving SJS cycles / Thorn a ring and seeing what they say.
Cheers Woffle the Modolo Dumbo may do the trick. May have to ride with a bag on my head though 😉
Depends Which 'style' of Butterfly bar you mean ! MOST designs ( eg.Modolo Traveller / Trekking ) only require the shifter to be slid onto the (straight )end of the bar ( before the brake lever ) HOWEVER in most cases you'll notice that there isn't much room for the handlebar grip or the grip curves around the bend of the bar.
You need a hubub from John St cycles.........about £40
