I am looking for a little reassurance here. Just done my annual oil change and what came out was filthy stuff looking like dilute grinding paste. Same appearance as last year and last years cleaning oil when left to settle had a sludge of what looked like very fine metal particles in it. The hub runs fine.
The hub has done a good few thousand miles now on the tandem but not into many tens of thousands. I sort of expected that this year the amount of filth in the cleaning oil would be less as the hub would be run in.
I assume this is normal?
I slapped a magnet on the outside of the old oil vessel from mine and a whole lot of shavings collected there.... Seems fine though!
the used oil in mine looked the same for the last 5 years so I think it is normal. No problems with the hub so must be ok.
Ta chaps.
I tried the magnet trick - its definitely steel particles.
In Rohloff terms you're still in the early running in phase.
It doesn't sound like a pepper grinder for nothing.
As far as I understand it what you have is normal for a Rohloff. You don't tend to see it with exposed gear systems because it gets washed off, where with the Rohloff all of the worn off metal is contained in the oil.
If you're worried then give it "flush" by adding more oil, drain, repeat until it looks cleanish, then top up with the required amount of new oil. I'd not bother personally, just ride it.
Yup, completely normal for Rohloff 😀
Ta again chaps - I just wanted to be reassured this was normal
