Rockshox Zeb, can you.....?

Hoping the hive mind can answer this...

I want to have a 170mm travel my23 Zeb Ultimate, however current estimates are for no stock until mid 2023. The 180mm travel version however is readily available.

I have access to a 170mm travel my23 Zeb Select, which can be changed to 180mm without any issues, so in the past it would be a simple case of swapping the airsprings to get the right travel for the right fork.

In 2023, the posh forks come with buttercups on the end of the airspring, but the Select forks don't.

So, does anyone know if the buttercups can be unscrewed from the base of one airspring and transferred to the other (as implied from p28 of the service manual

) or if, as I suspect, that will change the length of the airshaft and it wouldn't work.

Yes I would like to keep the buttercup advantage, yes 10mm is very little difference in fork travel and the bike could be over-forked, yes we are spoilt these days and there are far more important things to be worrying about.

Thanks for any knowledge and suggestions!

Just had a quick look at the doc.
Looks like the standard airshaft has a spacer type thing in the end of it that is removable.
I presume this is to make it the same length as the airshaft with a buttercup fitted.
Good work from the honourablegeorge though.

By the way, how is the new 2023 airshaft?? Is it a worthwhile upgrade?? I find I run quite a lot of pressure in mine to stop them diving on really steep stuff.

It's 3 times the price of the old airshaft, and will leave you with a buttercup on just one side, which I suspect is pointless

The Ultimate and Select share the same modular air shaft. The Select model has a screw on foot, whereas the Ultimate has the screw on Buttercup.
In answer to your question, yes you can use the 170mm shaft from your Select model. You'll need a 10mm shaft clamp to enable you to remove the ends of each shaft. You'll need to warm the end of the shaft to soften the threadlock.

Worth noting no new 170mm shafts for 5 months .. all other lengths due in Monday at Zyro.

TBH I am very sceptical to the actual benefit of the buttercup. Having ridden one I would just get whatever fork I could get and fit the V1 hairspring and a luftkappe.

How have you found the 2023 Zeb??

I had a 2023 Zeb ultimate and didn't have a good experience if I'm honest. Sent back for warranty twice and now being sent a new fork that I'm in two minds about keeping.

How does the Luftkappe change it, may I ask?

I'm pretty much set on getting a Smashpot for my V1 Zeb and I was gonna drop you a line about it at some point, but the Luftkappe is a fair bit cheaper.

It gives it more mid stroke support but with better small bump sensitivity and good bottom out resistance. It's basically the same as the new RS air shaft but without the buttercup and it's cheaper.

A coil is still better than an air spring but the Luftkappe is a very good option. I will try and get some graphs of the air spring characteristic changes up when I get 5 minutes.

Gets serviced just as often as the old one, not convinced by running the forks in the middle settings, still found myself fully open on high speed and a few clicks from open on low, rebound is set on the faster side. I'm 95kg, so would expect to be more closed, no idea how the lighter folk manage! 78psi and 1 token from memory, this is on a kenevo sl, on the G1 I'm a bit lower on pressure
