Hi all,

Ive searched and searched for a definitive on this.

Im wanting to service my lowers tomorrow and looking for the right oil to use, i know the 0-30 rockshox is the right oil but is difficult to get hold of - yes i know it should be the right oil used but there must be a reliable alternative for the lowers

Question is, what alternative is right that can be used and actually purchased either locally or Amazon etc..

Ive seen loads on varying Wt ratings..

Anyone any expertise?

Thanks in advance

Fully synthetic 0-30w engine oil. Sounds weird but its what the experts recommend.

I've used 5-30 no issues.

What’s wrong with just using the 0w30 it’s not hard to get hold of - you can get it from amazon delivered tomorrow.

£25 a litre so not cheap if that’s the issue but lasts forever.

I think you can afford to play a little fast and loose with lower oil, TFT sell their own mix for not much, or RSP stuff on Amazon.

Why did they change it from the 15w that you use in recons etc?

Because 15wt oil was damping oil and is not designed specifically to be super slippery for sliding parts.

Fully synthetic motor oil on the other hand, is designed exactly for that. They made the change quite some time ago. The first pikes were 0w30, so that's what 4, 5 years?

I picked up some motorcycle 0w20. Seems to do the job just as well.

Bear mind that forks never get up to engine temperatures, so the second number is irrelevant anyway.

Cheers lads.   Do u think I should use 0-30 in my recon and Reba lowers instead of 15w?

I would not use any oil but the correct one. just not worth it. Long term i hav heard of seals going and general life expectancy of the shocks not lasting. If anyone is close the midlands(Cannock) I have quite a bit of the rockshox 0-30 if somone needs some for a service

I have a bottle of 15w and 5w which I’ll use for the recons.  When you say correct oil mate do you mean rockshox own brand or the correct viscosity I.e. would this work ?  https://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/p/car-parts/engine-parts/engine-parts1/engine-oils/?521772972&1&cc5_249
