I'm trying to do my first 50 hour lowers service on my SID 35mm ultimate. I've just done an air can service on my sidluxe.
I've got the airstrip side open, 5mm hex, hit it a few times and it comes off.
Damper side just won't let go. I've taken off the 10mm nut, put a 5mm hex in and hit it, with no effect. Looking in there, and comparing to the other side, there seems to be a washer at the bottom of the threads that is jammed in there stopping it releasing. There is not as much of a bump visible as on the other side,
Anyone done a lowers service, and seen a washer? Or got it out if its stuck in there? Any other advice?
I've swapped air shaft on my 35mm SID Select+, IIRC they're stubborn to split, needs a fair bit of a push on the brace but don't hit it with anything.
On mine it was the washer. I got it off with some long needle nosed pliers then the lower came off easier.
Well, this has utterly defeated me. The only option left is to destroy the crush washer, and try source one from somewhere, which seems a just as impossible task right now.
Are they just the standard Rock Shox crush washers or do they use something different?
I'm guessing normal ones. When I asked my LBS to enquire about service kits for the SID and SIDLUXE, and got told 18 months wait to get any, I just decided to do a simple grease and oil service myself.
I've read lots of people don't bother with the crush washer, but will pop around to a few LBS's to see if they might have any.
The main issue has been trying to get that one out. It is down the tube of the legs, so only accessible with long nose pliers. I'm worried about damaging the threads of the damper as I pull. First attempts have resulted in nothing happening except a bit of damage at the edges of the washer.
You can get a bulk bag of RockShox crush washers, 50 for £10 RRP. Normally lots of places selling 2 for a couple of quid.
I replace crush washers any time I take lowers off.
Pretty common for Fox crush washers to stick on the stud.
RockShox seal kit availability is dire just now. Zyro are also not bringing in some parts for RockShox stock if they dont think they will sell enough, some seal kits are buy to order anyway.
I've had to order kits from Europe. They come quick enough.
Same here, got a bag of crush washers years ago but plenty of sellers on ebay.
Just watch those foam rings though 4mm thick and a fiddly pain to fit when oil soaked, why they couldn't be 6mm like the other 35mm forks?!
And yes, seal kits from Europe, the uk distributor love selling us forks and shocks but not the means to service them!
I have a pair of Lyriks so slightly different, but I did my first lower leg service watching the rockshox video and did find one of my legs needed a bigger mallet and some considerable knocks to free it up, I have since done another lower leg service and didn't have the issue again, I assumed they'd been over torqued from factory.
SRAM tech docs say that the same crush washers can be used for the 50, 100, and 150 hour service, but need to be replaced at the full 200 hour service. However if damaged then you'll need to replace sooner.
The lack of availability for the service kits for the rear shocks is a bit of a pain.
However, there's no way you need to be changing the seals every 50 hours (as per the service docs). If that was correct then I'd be changing the seals every 3 months. I'm just going to do a basic air can service at 50 hours, repack with Maxima oil, and maybe do a full seal change at 100 hours if parts are available then.
I popped into my lbs, who had a go to release. He used a t handle similar to these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Facom-84TC-5-Metric-Handle-Hexagon/dp/B008EKXRGW/ref=sr_1_13?crid=3R0M6TA7I18QL&keywords=facom+allen+key+set&qid=1644876306&sprefix=Facom+a%2Caps%2C285&sr=8-13
2 taps and it came free. I was using an L shape allen and guess it just had to be perfectly straight.
