I may be buying a second hand Specialized Epic Evo, with Rockshox SID 120mm. I messaged the owner to ask about any issues/warranty with the known problems of the SID lower leg bushings coming loose. They responded saying the original fork was warrantied and needed a new oil dampner after a few rides, the warranty took so long they purchased a new SID from Chainreaction and fitted it to the bike, they "think" it's ok. This would come with no backup/warranty. My questions are:
1. Would you buy a bike with a first generation SID? I'm not able to view before as the bike would be posted.
2. Can you tell if there is an issue upon inspection without riding the bike? I believe you can feel some play similar to a slightly loose headset when the steering is at 90 degrees.
I have read a few online posts were some think loose bushings is a positive and helps make the fork more supple. Some were saying the loose bushings in SIDS can be ignored and to turn the bike upside down and pull on the lower legs, this lubricates the seals and made it feel much better, apparently.
I've sent a set back under warranty at about a year old for bushing-lay and they had new lowers fitted under warranty.
The guy in the bike shop I took them to, along with a couple of other people I've spoken to, said they develop the knock then don't really get any worse than that, just the irritating knock. They're great forks other than that.
Would Rockshox warranty them if I am the second owner and don't have the original bike receipt ? Well they were actually purchased from CRC so nothing to follow up there. Would they warranty it based on the serial number?
I was told that they wouldn't warranty the forks without the original receipt.
If your that definite about buying the bike ask to the to send the forks to Tf tuned for a service and ask them to check the forks while having service if they are the ones with the issue, if they are they will probs sort out under warranty from rockshox with the service, would cost the seller about £130, but at least you are both happy ?
