I've just picked up a second hand FS 'project' frame with plans to move the Xfusion Mqueens on my Solaris over and replace with a lower weight 120mm fork to make the Solaris more XC, but still trail friendly.
The new SID with 35mm stanchions look perfect from a weight perspective. There's 3 models available, Ultimate, Select Plus and Select. The ultimate get the new race day damper, the plus Charger 2 and the select a Charger RL. What are the differences between charger 2 and charger damper?
The Select is for sale around the £600 mark which makes it attractive compared to the ultimate but I'm unsure of the quality of the damper and lack of adjustment on all 3 forks? The Mqueens have been run with no high speed compression damping and 4 clicks of low speed and have been pretty good with decent small bump and little dive, so almost fit and forget.
Has anyone had any experience of the new SID's? How do they ride? Is the ultimate worth the extra? And what do you think of their suitability for the Solaris? Who runs 120mm forks?
Thanks and look forward to replies and debate.
Following with interest. Also have McQueens with Roughcut damper on my Pegasus and was looking at the new SID.
My only worry would be however much you reduce the friction in the spring and increase the negative volume you can't get away from the fact that big stanchions tend to bind. My 35's are very on/off when riding on the road, you can see them bind, then jump 10mm, bind, rebound etc. They're fine once you get moving off road (probably because the impacts are pushing up the fork rather than vertically downwards), I think there's an argument for "stiff enough" rather than incrementally bigger and bigger stanchions.
I'd still like to swap them for SID's but I can see why 32mm stanchions might actually have some benefit.

Small stanchions flex more, which causes binding. Nt convinced larger stanchions are worse in that respect.

Neither my 35mm lyriks nor 32mm rebas do this. Sounds like they need a good service?
I’d go for some Manitou Mattocs instead. Lightish, cheaper, 34mm stanchions but supposed to be stiffer than Pikes and better damping.
See the recent Manitou appreciation thread.
I’ve just put a set of SID 35mm Select on Chameleon. First proper ride Exmoor Saturday. I’ll try and remember to report back!
WTF ?
Is this still their lightweght race fork ?
😕
There's still a 32mm sid sl

ld like to know this damper difference as well - a 110mm travel 35mm fork on the front of my Spark RC would be hell of a difference.
I’m waiting for a few user reviews but I’m keen on the 120mm 35 legged Ultimate for my Spark RC.

Yup. Comes in 100mm as well and still only 1500ish gms
Isn't the new SID Ultimate lighter than the older 32mm version? I had the 32mm version and it was a really nice fork.
Nearly got the new one, but was convinced to go with the Mattoc Pro 3. I've ended up selling the bike it's attached to, but it's probably been the best fork I've ever had!
Only the Ultimate and Select are available aftermarket, had a quick bounce on a set of Select+ SIDs on the new Spur in my LBS and they felt like a Pike but lighter. The difference in weight between the Ultimate and Select/Select+ is quite a lot though, the Select+ is getting on for 150g heavier, so basically if you're buying for super super lightness, you'll need the Ultimate. Select/Select+ is still a good 200g or so lighter than a Pike mind, so a good saving all the same.
My question then is; is the select Damper better or worse than the Fox 32 100mm GRIP I have? I'd love the 35mm stations for bigger hit stiffness vs the 1200g weight penalty, but not if I'm reduced to a basic "moCo" type arrangement although the MoCo RC I have on my 2019 Revelaton seems fine.
I think they are all Debonair?
Ah ha - Charger RL. OK, subject to review then...

...I'm waiting on that.

@clink - any update?
Having thought my Sherpa frame was coming with Pikes it now looks like it’s these (website was apparently wrong!) and I’m working out whether to continue with the fork purchase with Stanton or source a set of Pikes myself.
Reviews online mainly are on the SID Ultimate, which are favourable, but have the new damper that the Select doesn’t have. I like the small stuff response of my Pikes, but if I can get that in a more XC fork I’d be tempted to try the SIDs.

I've ridden them on Exmoor, Mendips and Cwmcarn now. New 35 stanchions certainly make a difference. TBH I'm a fit-and-forget rider, so I can't provide much detailed feedback. They are composed on natural and man-made trails and no issues so far. Sorry!
Thinks Clink. I’m also a fit and forget rider (so much so I drive p20 mad as I don’t really spot issues) so this sounds a reasonable review to be honest. Enjoy.
