I have stripped the lowers off my Pikes today to do a routine lower leg service. I have let all the air out of the valve but the fork will not stay compressed. I rang a local bike shop and they said it sounds like air has pushed through to the negative air chamber? Still waiting back on the shops mechanic to call. How do i go about sorting this problem as i would rather do it myself. Thanks.
They shouldn't stay compressed - they should naturally return to almost full extension where the equalising 'dimple' is.
This^
Even when the gauge says zero at full extension, it isn't zero as soon as you start compressing them
Even when the gauge says zero at full extension
Even with the top of the air spring leg taken off it'll do the same because the negative air chamber closes off (or should do) as soon as you compress the fork and the pressure in it ends up going below ambient, so it "sucks"* the air piston back down again.
*Pedants: feel free to discuss amongst yourselves.
Really? It didn't feel right to me. The local bike shop said it sounded like air had pushed through to the negative air chamber?
even when empty, the negative spring closes off and works (pulls a negative pressure I suppose) as soon as you compress
Ok just me being dumb, i was following the mbr video on youtube and his fork seems to compress and stay compressed?
MBR video is the worst vide you can watch, totally wrong way of installing the lower legs.
I am not sure your LBS really knows whats its talking about. Your air spring is functioning as it should.
Oh god I used the mbr video for travel change and lower service on my pike fork today. In what way is it wrong out of interest. 1 thing that is strange when unweighted the fork compresses as I let the air out of the pump nearly like it's sucking up. Fork remains ok when pressured up though. 2016/17 Pikes
Fitting the lower legs and bolts with the fork fully compressed creates a vacuum in the lowers at full extension, this is not desirable.
