The Motion Control DNA damper from my 2014 (ish) Revelation isn't locking out. It had never been serviced, so I was hoping that a service would cure it, the problem maybe being lack of oil from a small leak into the lowers.

I replaced the seals etc. and filled with the requisite amount of oil (134ml of 5wt IIRC)), measured as accurately as I could, but still no dice.

Any suggestions? Should I maybe just try a few more ml of oil?

Possibly relevant: When I took it apart, there's two anonised screws that thread into the middle of the shaft inside the damper - one of them was loose in the oil. I put it back in, but they don't have any obvious function, so I can't see how that effects anything!

Cheers

If you search MTBR there's a thread on there about a spring that i think folds around one of the shims.I'll see if i can dig it out as it's quite common on that damper.
If you pm me your email addy iv'e got one of those dampers here out of a 2014 rev.I'll hi res some pics to you so you can cross ref against yours to see if you can spot it.
Here you go.
You'll see the said spring. It's the first pic in the thread.

Wow, that's really helpful, thanks! I've skim read through that MTBR thread - will have to pull my damper and go through it more thoroughly when I've got more time. Seems likely though.

Post #43 describes the same situation as I found - one of those blue ano screws and lots of aluminium in the oil. No sign of a washer though. Seems like they hold the lower valve on, which is pretty obvious from those photos, but wasn't so obvious to me when I had mine on the bench. The valve was certainly still attached. All that may or may not be relevant.

Really appreciate the offer of pics, but let me have a look at it first and I'll see if I can sort it without you going to the trouble 🙂

So I took my damper out again for a closer look.

It doesn't look like the common "spring migration" issue is the problem here. The spring seems to be where it should be as far as I can tell.

I think I've found the problem though. The lockout lever, with it's three settings (open, pedal, locked out), should turn part of the valve at the bottom so that the hole in one of the plates lines up with a hole in the body of the damper (which I presume is open), or not (which I presume is locked out).

Holes lined up (light shining through the hole):

Hole closed off:

Thing is, the relative position of the valve and damper body is affected by how tight the top cap (the part at the top which has two threads, one going into the crown, and one into the damper body) is threaded into the damper body.

I can set it so that the holes line up with the lockout lever in the open position, and are closed off in the lockout position (though it doesn't seem very precise way of doing it). But I can't see how it will ever be partially open in the pedal position (which I'm assuming is what's meant to happen) - the angles just don't work.

Am I making sense here or am I way off?
