I seem to remember that folk were finding them from new with inadequate oil amounts in them.  Is this still the case?  The brand new set on my new bike - would I be advised to do a lowers service now?  The are not as smooth as other forks I have but I have never had a new set before only second hand and of course i did lowers on them immediately.  Is it likely  they just need to be run in or is it likely the lowers oil levels are too low?

they are a bit squelchy as well.  Just fairly basic recons

Worth  strip and relube?

You might as well, it'll put your mind at rest. Probably just because they're new. If they have tokens check that they're tight enough as mine came loose after a couple of rides and made a weird rattling noise until I was told what the problem was.

Yes drop the lowers.
There's only a very small amount of oil in there anyway.
If they're squeaking it sounds like the foam rings might be dry.
Put the serial number into here for all the info on your fork.

Not squeaking - they squelch - the sound of air as well as oil being pushed thru the damper

A lot of stiction as well which could mean dry foam rings I guess or just tight new seals

If the seals are dry it adds a lot of friction. You can also get the bushes in the lowers resized if needed. I would start with a lower service, soak foam rings, lightly grease seals and correct amount of oil in the lowers. If you DIY it has so little cost and you know everything is good.

Squelchy noises is normally air in the damper oil. If its a basic RockShox damper you can pull the compression assembly out the top to check the oil level. Check the tech docs first.

The basic Rockshox dampers will make squelchy noises if they have been upside down until the air is back in the right place.

Ta folks.  Looks like pulling the lowers off is a good bet.

If anyone is interested I pulled the lowers off.  foam rings well soaked and everything wet with oil - but no actual drops of oil came out so 6ml added as recommended and the fork does feel better.

That's useful to know. I've got a new set of Rockshox arriving tomorrow.

Yes, do it. The foam rings on the SIDs on my new Spur were bone dry, and the seals had zero grease.

I have the same feeling about my Privateer. The fork feels OK, but definitely sticker than I would expect. A friend bought the recent PSA Lyrik Ultimate. When I changed the air spring for her, not a single drop of oil came out.

Same as Devash on an almost new Fox fork. Fluids were correct but there was no oil in the foam rings. The grease in the seal recess looked like it had been applied by a machine in a series of tiny consecutive blobs & hadn't been in contact with the stanchion. Its quick and easy to check, it's also transformed the initial part of the stroke.

Anyone know a good supplier of crush washers? And is there any difference between a Lyrik and a Pike or could I just buy one bag for both forks?

And is that RSP Slick Kick the best stuff for inside the seals?

J Tech / TF Tuned, or eBay.
