My friend is after a reasonably fast and comfortable commuter that can also have bigger tyres, mudguards abd a rack as well as being able to out a child seat and tow his other kid on trailer. What's out there? 🙂

Well 1K is the bike to work limit so there's lots out there. I've the Genesis Croix de Fer 10 which is now £1K but there's also the Pinnacle Arkose which is very similar. Kinesis might be worth checking out as well.

Second the Grinduro above, had mine 7 weeks now and loving it, did manage to pick one up for £500 when they were reduced, easy bike to ride all day and the TRP hydraulic brakes on it are really good.

Heard great things about the Rove. If you like the look of it, I'm sure it'll make you happy. But you're probably paying a little more for the name on the downtube compared to a genesis or a pinnacle.

I've got the 2018 Rove ST. Love it. Only thing I've changed is the tyres to 42's.

2nd the Vagabond, very rugged, nicely versatile, and comfy for long rides. I've got a second set of wheels set up for road.

Look for bargains on last year's model - I got mine for £799 .

All good choices but I'm happy with my Arkose. They still seem good value vs say genesis

I didn't really buy into the springy steel concept at this price pint post CE testing.

The rove ST 2018 looks lovely but is £1399?

I've got a road rat with 36c tyres, drop bars, discs. Rides great as a commuter. Could easily manage much more mileage than i'm throwing at it. Anything along similar lines would eat up the commuting miles in any weather conditions for years and years. Good for varied terrain, there are a number of routes I can choose into work ranging from all road, bumpy canal path and cinder track.
