Hi Guys
I know a lot of you Northern folk have ridden the Whitby-Scarborough cinder track. You will agree that it is an awesomely beautiful ride, especially the section past my place in Robin Hoods Bay.
Well, Sustains seems intent on 'widening and improving' the whole track, in spite of the wishes of the vast majority of local users, including all us local cyclists. I have been privileged to have regularly ridden the track for 30 years, during which time the track has matured into something really special. Sustains' proposals include doubling the width, ripping out the majority of trees lining the route, levelling the verges, and digging deep drainage ditches either side of the rebuilt track.
If you have ridden this delightful route, and see no reason to turn it into a cyclists' motorway, I would urge you to check out this petition

https://www.change.org/p/scarborough-borough-council-save-our-cinder-track

Best Wishes
Mr CRUD

Signed.

Had a spin along there during the Easter holidays while we were camping in Fylingthorpe. Lovely little scenic trail. Absolutely no reason to resurface/widen it. Totally rideable for all abilities as it is (the amount of families I saw pootling happily along testifies to that). A couple of short eroded rougher sections but nothing to cause concern for anyone.

Some cracking coastal views all the way along it, especially around Ravenscar (and yes, I was slightly overbiked).

Not ridden it but those plans pretty much sum up everything I don't like seeing happen to a beautiful tail.

Will go sign right now!

Colournoise...I live in fylingthorpe, so you can imagine my concern. It would be heartbreaking to witness the destruction if sustrans are allowed to do their thing.

Gravel bikes, I love 'em! Cheap-ish, fast, go anywhere. What's not to like? They remind me of the early MTB days!

Can't believe they'd want to do that, it's fine as it is.

This just sounds daft, It's perfect exactly as is.

I wish more sustrans routes were as good as the cinder track...

Where do you join onto this path. Headed to Whitby on the 27th. Looks a nice wee run in the mornings to get me out and about to Robin Hood bay and back.

Cheers alan.

Signed, it's quite local to me and more than good enough already for me with the child trailer. Would be sad to see it lose its character, especially when there are so many other routes that need to be created.

Alan - it's part of NCR1 if you head south out of Whitby. It's signposted out of the middle of town.

They've just done a load of work to the track heading out of rhb to Hawsker.

It's was a sympathetic restoration. Sorted out drainage and removed some deep grooves etc. I was there Friday and it was really busy and popular.

Has anyone actually asked for it to be improved more than this?

There are some parts after Ravenscar in the woods that are muddy and could do with some cinder putting down but that section has its own unique charm that could be lost.

There are so many more projects that they could spend the money on that actually do need improvement.

Sorry Damascus, but the section you are referring to was vastly more 'natural' before the roadworks transformed it. The drainage ditches they dug are already blocked. The meadow-like flowery side verges are now just nettles and thistles. The 'urbanisation' of this line has been a disaster as far as locals are concerned. And, it has not resulted in increased traffic, only increased speed from cyclists.

Some of you may remember the relevant track from the NEMBA race at Robin Hoods Bay, 1990? It was on the course. The good auld days of MTB racing!

If you go up Larpool Lane in Whitby you can join the track near the viaduct. Also I'd recommend going as far as Ravenscar before returning to Whitby.

Are you staying near the Abbey? If so, join the track at Hawsker (you can't miss it) and ride to Ravenscar and back. If you ride in the morning, pm me, I might join you and show you some of the secret trails...

One of these pics is after Sustrans has done their work, the other is the track as-is. Both shots are within 10 minutes of RHB

All those trees are destined to be uprooted. We still have time to influence Sustrans. If you would like the track to stayy as-is with minor repairs, please see this petition

Signed used to run a small bike hire from Cloughton Station down south of the trail I do remember some of my customers having the odd fall due to the condition of the track in places and I was up there 3 months ago and though it could do with a bit of trail maintenance but does not meed widening.

Really can't understand the motivation for this - we've done it with a 2 seater kids trailer and, apart from the usual faff entering and leaving in a couple of places where they've put a load of metalwork to stop motorbikes, not had any problems. Subsequently done sections with the kids on various size bikes, including pretty small, and again, no problem.

I can see only bad things resulting from this - lots of non-cyclists use this, including families with very young kids - a "better" surface will lead to faster cycling and more conflicts and accidents.
